Mount Yasur's Glowing Bursts Reveal an Active Volcano

Discover the glowing fragments and gas-driven explosions of Mount Yasur on Vanuatu's Tanna Island, where activity changes and monitoring matters.

At Mount Yasur, incandescent fragments can arc above the crater before falling back toward the volcano. Against a dark sky, those bursts make Earth's heat visible.

The spectacle is not a timed performance. Yasur is an active volcano whose behavior can change.

A volcano on Tanna

Yasur lies on Tanna Island in Vanuatu. Its summit crater contains active vents that release gas, ash, and hot material.

The Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program describes a long history of explosive activity, including glowing volcanic bombs and lava fountaining.

A volcanic “bomb” is a fragment ejected while molten or partly molten. The term describes a natural eruption product, not an explosive device.

What Strombolian means

Yasur often shows Strombolian activity, named after Stromboli in Italy. Gas-driven bursts throw hot fragments from a vent.

Oregon State University's Volcano World describes this style of eruption at Yasur.

The bursts can look distinct from one another, but that does not make them predictable in timing, strength, or direction. A familiar eruption style is not a guarantee of a gentle event.

A photograph compresses the experience

Night images make glowing material especially conspicuous. Longer exposures can record bright trails as fragments travel through the air.

Daytime views reveal other features, including the crater shape, ash, and plumes. Neither a night photograph nor a short video shows the volcano's complete behavior.

Monitoring belongs in the story

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department provides current alert information. Local guidance and official restrictions should determine access.

Tanna is also home to communities living with the volcano, whose experience belongs alongside the dramatic images.

Yasur inspires wonder because it reveals a planet still working from within. Appreciating it means seeing both the beautiful glow and the powerful, changing system that produces it.
