Flight attendant kindness became a widely shared story after Monique Harris helped an exhausted mother traveling with her baby. A fellow passenger photographed the Republic Airways employee holding the infant during a September 2 flight from Newark to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Harris told ABC News that she noticed the mother falling asleep with the baby in her lap. Concerned the infant might fall, she stepped in and picked up the child.
A Tired Mother Gets Reassurance
When the mother woke, she worried that she had dropped her baby. Harris reassured her and offered to hold the infant while she rested, according to ABC’s report.
Harris said the woman explained that she had given birth abroad and had only recently been able to return to the United States. Her family had not yet met the baby.
The mother thanked Harris and took her child back, holding the baby for the remainder of the flight.
A Passenger Shares the Moment
Traveler John Frehse photographed Harris without her realizing it at the time. He later posted the image and praised her for helping the mother.
Frehse described the baby as being close to slipping from the sleeping passenger’s lap when Harris intervened. He identified the flight as United flight UA3486, according to News 12 New Jersey.
“I fly a lot and she was the greatest flight attendant I have experienced in 30 years,” Frehse told the outlet.
Republic Airways also praised Harris in a response to the post. Harris said in her own comment that she had not expected recognition for helping.
Kindness Beyond the Photograph
Harris told ABC that she has long written encouraging notes for passengers. For this mother, she recalled writing a message reassuring her that she was doing a good job and was stronger than she felt.
The photograph captured one brief interaction. Harris’s account revealed the reassurance behind it: a tired parent received help, understanding and a few words of encouragement on her journey home.
