Poland's Crooked Forest Keeps Its Curved-Trunk Mystery

The Crooked Forest's pine trunks bend near the ground before rising upright. Discover what is known about their shape—and what remains uncertain.

In Poland's Crooked Forest, pine trunks curve outward near the ground before turning upward. Seen together, the trees look as though they began growing in the wrong direction and then changed their minds.

Their shapes are real. The explanation is less settled than many internet stories suggest.

The bend comes before the upright trunk

The grove, known as Krzywy Las, lies near Nowe Czarnowo in the Gryfino area of northwestern Poland.

Its most distinctive feature is the low bend. Above that curve, much of each trunk rises in a more familiar upright direction.

Poland's State Forests describes the continuing interest in the site. Nearby straight trees make the unusual grove especially noticeable.

What the trees do not tell us directly

Theories include deliberate shaping of young trees and various forms of early damage. One popular suggestion is that curved wood was being grown for a practical purpose.

But a plausible story is not the same as a documented event.

The regional tourism authority acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding the forest's origin. Claims involving a specific wartime incident or a confirmed timber project should not be presented as established fact without evidence.

A living place, not a fixed sculpture

These are aging trees. Their condition changes, and individual trunks can be damaged or lost.

Historical counts and old photographs may therefore differ from what is visible at another time. The remarkable shape does not make a tree immune to ordinary biological decline.

Curiosity without an invented answer

Protecting the grove means respecting the trunks and the woodland around them. Climbing on the curves for a photograph can damage living structures.

The Crooked Forest remains fascinating even without a neat solution. It invites us to notice what evidence actually shows: young growth was redirected, the trees continued upward, and the resulting forms still challenge our expectations. A good mystery deserves careful observation more than a confident guess.
