Kristen Wiig turned a disastrous wedding season into comedy gold in Bridesmaids.
Her career since that breakthrough has included writing, dramatic acting, voice roles and a return to leading television. The latest significant change is that Palm Royale, which she starred in and executive produced, ended after two seasons. Apple TV's cancellation was reported in March 2026.
That leaves a different question from whether she has retired. Wiig has continued working, including voicing Roboto in 2026's Masters of the Universe, while another film, Cut Off, has faced a release delay.
Saturday Night Live built the foundation
Wiig was a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2005 to 2012. Her years on the show established the comic precision that later carried into movies: a character could be wildly strange while remaining entirely serious about her own behavior.
Leaving the weekly cast did not sever that connection. She returned to host, reaching her fifth hosting appearance on April 6, 2024. The celebration brought out former colleagues and celebrity guests, including Paul Rudd, Matt Damon and Ryan Gosling.
“As a former cast member, it is very special being a five timer,” she said during the opening monologue, as reported by TheWrap.
Like Tina Fey's work after SNL, Wiig's subsequent career shows how the sketch show can remain a creative home even after it stops being someone's full-time job.

Bridesmaids made her a movie star and Oscar-nominated writer
The importance of Bridesmaids goes beyond Wiig's performance as Annie. She co-wrote the screenplay with Annie Mumolo, a collaborator from the Groundlings comedy troupe.
The American Film Institute's production history traces their work on the script to 2006. Judd Apatow approached Wiig about developing a starring vehicle after her small role in Knocked Up, while Mumolo's experiences at weddings helped inform the material.
The resulting 2011 film found comedy in friendship, jealousy and the humiliation of feeling left behind. Annie's disasters worked because the emotional stakes were recognizable beneath the outrageous situations.
Wiig and Mumolo received an original-screenplay Oscar nomination at the 2012 Academy Awards. Their co-star Melissa McCarthy also earned a nomination for her supporting performance.
For Wiig, the recognition established that her contribution extended beyond delivering the jokes. She had helped create the story that made the ensemble possible.
She kept room for smaller films and stranger comedy
Wiig's film choices did not stay within one version of the broad studio comedy. In 2014, she appeared opposite Bill Hader in The Skeleton Twins, playing Maggie Dean.
Craig Johnson directed the comedy-drama, which he co-wrote with Mark Heyman. The AFI's credits place Wiig and Hader at its center, with Luke Wilson and Ty Burrell among the supporting cast.
The pairing offered audiences a different setting for two performers associated with sketch comedy. Their familiarity could support uncomfortable emotion as readily as a punch line.
Then Wiig reunited with Mumolo as co-writer and co-star of 2021's Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar. The AFI's description follows two Midwestern friends on a Florida vacation that becomes entangled with romance and an extravagant villainous plot.
It was a deliberately odd premise, far removed from simply making another wedding comedy. The collaboration gave both writers space to put their own comic sensibility on screen again.

Palm Royale became her major television chapter
In Palm Royale, Wiig played Maxine Simmons, a woman determined to gain entry to Palm Beach high society. The period setting gave her a world of polished appearances, social ambition and carefully guarded status to disrupt.
Wiig also executive produced the series alongside fellow star Laura Dern. Its ensemble included Allison Janney, Carol Burnett, Leslie Bibb and Ricky Martin.
Apple's season-two announcement scheduled its return for November 12, 2025, with episodes continuing through January 14, 2026.
The show gave Wiig a sustained central character again, but with a very different rhythm from SNL. Maxine's ambitions could unfold across a season instead of being compressed into a sketch.
Palm Royale was canceled after its second season
In March 2026, TheWrap reported that Apple TV had canceled Palm Royale. The series therefore ended with season two; there is no announced third season to point viewers toward.
That distinction matters when reading older interviews and promotional coverage. A cast member discussing possibilities during a show's run does not establish that another season will happen.
The cancellation closes a specific job in Wiig's career. It does not establish that she has left acting, and her other credits provide a more complete account of what she has been doing.
Her recent work includes Roboto and a delayed comedy
Wiig voiced Roboto in Masters of the Universe, the 2026 film directed by Travis Knight. Amazon's official guide lists her in the cast and confirms the film is available on Prime Video.
She also joined Jonah Hill in Cut Off, a comedy about wealthy siblings forced to navigate life after losing family financial support. Its originally announced July 2026 theatrical date was withdrawn.
In June, TheWrap reported Warner Bros.' response to claims about the delayed film. A release delay should not be mistaken for a completed theatrical release or treated as evidence about Wiig's personal choices.
As of November 2026, her career contains both a finished television chapter and continuing movie work. The performer audiences remember from Bridesmaids is still finding different characters to inhabit, even when those characters are heard rather than seen.
