What Happened to Tina Fey? Her Career After 30 Rock

Tina Fey kept writing, producing and performing after 30 Rock. Her latest chapter includes The Four Seasons and the continuing Mean Girls story.

Tina Fey made Liz Lemon’s workplace chaos feel personal on 30 Rock.

If you are wondering what happened to Tina Fey, she is still writing, producing and acting. Her Netflix comedy The Four Seasons returned for a second season in 2026, and a third season has entered production. The weekly NBC sitcom that made her a household name has given way to a career spread across streaming, movies and live comedy.

That change can make her work harder to follow. Sometimes she is the face on the screen. Sometimes her name appears among the people who built the show.

Tina Fey built her career in the writers’ room

Fey joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 1997 and became head writer in 1999. Her move into leadership came before 30 Rock, which helps explain why her later career has never been limited to accepting acting roles. Entertainment Weekly’s account of her SNL years traces that early progression.

The distinction matters when looking for a supposed disappearance. A performer can leave a regular television slot while continuing to create the material other performers deliver.

For Fey, the writing desk and the camera have long belonged to the same working life. Her public identity grew around both, even when one side became more visible than the other.

Liz Lemon made that working life into television

On 30 Rock, Fey combined performing with writing and executive producing. Liz Lemon’s struggle to manage an unruly television workplace gave the series its center, while Fey’s responsibilities extended beyond the character.

The Television Academy’s biography credits her multiple roles on the show and its consecutive comedy-series Emmy wins in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

That is why simply asking which sitcom she starred in next misses part of the story. 30 Rock established her as someone who could help build a series as well as lead its cast.

Fans of enduring television comedy may also recognize that distinction in Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s career after her signature sitcoms. Familiar characters remain part of the audience’s memory while the work around them keeps changing.

Her producing work continued beyond 30 Rock

Fey’s subsequent television work included Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which ran for four seasons and received an interactive film. She also executive produced Girls5eva, created by Meredith Scardino.

Netflix’s announcement of The Four Seasons places those projects within her continuing relationship with the company.

These credits explain some of the distance between being constantly recognizable and being constantly on screen. A producer’s work does not necessarily come with a leading role or a weekly close-up.

The creative relationships also continued. For The Four Seasons, Fey teamed with Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, colleagues from the final season of 30 Rock. The new series adapts Alan Alda’s 1981 film about friends vacationing together.

It is a different setting for a familiar interest: people who care about one another and still manage to make being together complicated.

Mean Girls became another continuing creative project

The 2024 Mean Girls musical film offers another answer to where Fey’s time has gone. Paramount’s official credits identify her as its screenwriter and a producer, as well as the writer of the stage musical’s book.

The film brought the story of Cady Heron, Regina George and the Plastics to another cast and another format. Its screenplay grew out of a stage musical with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin.

For audiences, it was a new version of a familiar high-school story. For Fey, it represented continued authorship across different forms of entertainment.

That kind of work rarely fits neatly into a “where did she go?” timeline. The same creative property can occupy years of a writer’s career while changing the performers who appear most prominently in its publicity.

The Four Seasons brought her back to an ensemble

Fey plays Kate in The Four Seasons, alongside an ensemble that includes Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani.

The second season arrived on May 28, 2026. Its friendships have to adjust to loss and changing circumstances, rather than simply repeat the same vacations. Discussing that shift, Fey told Netflix’s Tudum, “They have to learn to re-form as a group in a different configuration.”

The appeal is the tension between knowing someone for years and discovering that familiarity does not make every transition easy. Fey’s character belongs to that shared story, rather than carrying it alone.

Where Tina Fey’s career stands in 2026

As of November 2026, Netflix confirms that season three has started production. Production is a concrete next step, although it should not be confused with a released season.

There are other ways to revisit her voice, too. Her 2011 book Bossypants brings together autobiographical essays about comedy, work and motherhood. Her Restless Leg Tour with Amy Poehler has also taken their collaboration onto the stage.

Fey’s career now moves among those different spaces. Liz Lemon remains an easy place to find her in reruns, but Kate and the ongoing work behind The Four Seasons offer a more current answer.
