What Happened to Tracee Ellis Ross? Life After Black-ish

Tracee Ellis Ross followed Black-ish with Pattern, solo travel television and a 2026 Broadway debut. Here's where her career stands now.

Tracee Ellis Ross made Joan Clayton and Rainbow Johnson feel like women viewers knew personally.

Since Black-ish ended in 2022, her career has spread across travel television, beauty and the stage. In 2026, she returned with a second season of Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross and made her Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing. The familiar weekly sitcom appointment ended; the work continued in several directions.

Girlfriends gave Tracee Ellis Ross a career of her own

Being Diana Ross's daughter made her surname recognizable before she became a television star. Building an identity as a performer was a separate undertaking.

Ross studied theater at Brown University, graduating in 1994. Her defining early role arrived in 2000 when she began playing Joan Clayton on Girlfriends, a part she held through 2008. She later played Dr. Carla Reed in Reed Between the Lines, according to her Golden Globes biography.

Those roles established a particular strength: women who could be accomplished, stylish and completely overwhelmed in the same scene. Joan's friendships and romantic disappointments gave Ross room for physical comedy as well as quieter vulnerability.

For viewers who first met her there, the attachment predates Black-ish. She had already spent years as the center of a television ensemble before Rainbow Johnson entered the picture.

Black-ish ended after eight seasons

Ross began playing Rainbow, usually called Bow, opposite Anthony Anderson in 2014. She won the 2017 Golden Globe for television comedy actress, recognition that placed the performance among her career's major achievements.

The series concluded on April 19, 2022, after eight seasons. Disney's farewell to the show emphasized its combination of family comedy and conversations about race, identity and American life.

That ending helps explain why some viewers began asking what happened to her. A long-running series creates a dependable point of contact with an actor; its finale removes that routine even when the actor remains busy.

The distinction also appears in Tichina Arnold's career after The Neighborhood: the conclusion of a familiar sitcom changes how audiences encounter a performer.

The High Note let audiences hear another side of her

Before Black-ish finished, Ross took the lead in the 2020 film The High Note. She played Grace Davis, an established music star facing decisions about the next phase of her career.

Nisha Ganatra directed the film, with Dakota Johnson playing Grace's assistant Maggie, who wants to become a music producer. Focus Features describes a story in which the ambitions of both women push them toward a consequential professional gamble.

Ross also performed music for the film. For an actress whose mother is one of popular music's most recognizable voices, that gave the role an additional layer of public interest.

But Grace was a fictional character, with her own ambitions and contradictions. The film offered something different from another season of a familiar comedy: a central movie role built around performance, professional insecurity and the possibility of changing course.

Pattern grew out of her own relationship with her hair

Ross launched Pattern in 2019, after beginning work on the idea in 2009. The company focuses on curly, coily and tightly textured hair, with Ross serving as founder and CEO, according to Cosmetic Executive Women.

Her own account makes clear why the subject mattered. In a 2019 essay for Pattern, she wrote, “It was long road to knowing, understanding and, eventually, loving my curls.”

She described growing up with beauty images that did not reflect her features or hair, then trying treatments and styling methods that damaged it. The business emerged from that history of learning how to care for, rather than constantly reshape, her natural texture.

Hair also became a storytelling subject. Ross executive produced and narrated The Hair Tales, the documentary series released through OWN and Hulu in 2022. Business and screen work overlapped around a subject she had already discussed personally.

Solo Traveling returned for a second season in 2026

Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross brought her to audiences as herself. Its first season followed trips to Morocco, Mexico and Spain.

Speaking with The Associated Press in 2025, Ross discussed the practical and emotional adjustments involved in traveling alone, including building confidence through smaller experiences such as eating out by yourself.

The second season premiered on The Roku Channel on July 20, 2026. Parade's preview identified Australia, Thailand and Switzerland as its destinations.

The appeal extends beyond the scenery. Her enthusiasm, elaborate packing and willingness to look slightly uncertain make the format a different use of the personality sitcom viewers already recognized.

Her Broadway debut became another first

Ross made her Broadway debut on July 7, 2026, in Every Brilliant Thing. Written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, the solo play centers on a life recalled through a list of things that make living worthwhile.

Her engagement comprised 40 performances at the Hudson Theatre, ending August 9. The production's official website confirms that the Broadway run has finished.

The move places her alongside television actors such as Cynthia Nixon whose careers include substantial work on stage, although Ross was marking a Broadway first.

As of November 2026, the clearest picture is a working actress and entrepreneur with several outlets for her voice. Joan and Bow remain the roles many people return to, while her newer work gives those viewers different ways to spend time with her.
