Hilary Swank's determined boxer in Million Dollar Baby helped make her a two-time Oscar winner.

Years later, she stepped away from acting for a deeply personal reason: caring for her father after a lung transplant. The break lasted roughly three years. She subsequently returned to films and television, became a mother and joined Yellowjackets.

As of November 2026, she remains part of that show's cast, with its fourth and final season scheduled to premiere November 20. Her career has included genuine pauses, but the story did not end when she left the awards-season spotlight.

Two Oscars followed an uncertain beginning

Swank's early career included The Next Karate Kid and a role on Beverly Hills, 90210. The latter did not provide the lasting security she had hoped for: her contract ended after 14 episodes, according to the Academy of Achievement's biography.

Then Boys Don't Cry changed her professional life. Playing Brandon Teena, a transgender man whose life ended in violence, she took on a demanding role in a small film that reached far beyond its scale.

She won the 2000 leading-actress Oscar for that performance. Five years later, she won the same award for Million Dollar Baby, playing aspiring boxer Maggie Fitzgerald opposite Clint Eastwood.

Those two performances established her reputation for emotionally intense characters. They also created an unusually high benchmark against which later work would be measured.

The awards are milestones, though, rather than a requirement that every subsequent role produce the same kind of attention. Like Jodie Foster, another two-time lead-actress Oscar winner, Swank has continued working across changing phases of a long career.

She took time away to care for her father

Swank has explained the most significant interruption in her career herself. Her father needed a lung transplant, and she took time away to help care for him.

In a 2018 interview with ABC News, she said that what she initially expected to be about a year became three. She also described feeling fortunate that her work allowed her to make that choice.

The period changed her relationship with acting. Taking time away, she told ABC, renewed her appreciation for storytelling.

That account is more specific than the familiar suggestion that a star simply disappeared. She had a family responsibility that took priority, and she has spoken about the value of the time it gave her.

Her 2018 film What They Had brought a related subject into her work. She played a woman returning home as her mother experienced Alzheimer's disease, a story she said echoed aspects of her own experience of caring for a parent.

Television became an important part of her return

Swank's later work included Away, the Netflix series in which she played astronaut Emma Green. Netflix's announcement presented the role as a mission leader balancing an extraordinary professional undertaking with family ties.

In Alaska Daily, she played journalist Eileen Fitzgerald, who leaves New York for a job at an Anchorage newspaper. Swank also executive produced the series.

A Television Academy profile connected her interest in the character to a recurring theme in her work: outsiders trying to find their footing. The reporting storyline investigated the disappearance of Alaska Native women.

ABC canceled Alaska Daily after one season in 2023, as UPI reported. That ended the program, rather than marking another announced retirement by its star.

The move between films and television also recalls Halle Berry's varied screen career, where a single famous award-winning performance captures only part of the work.

Ordinary Angels returned to questions of care and community

Swank starred opposite Alan Ritchson in the 2024 film Ordinary Angels. She played Sharon, a Kentucky hairdresser who becomes involved in helping a widowed father and his daughters.

The younger daughter needs a liver transplant, and Sharon begins organizing practical help around the family. The film's official synopsis describes a woman finding renewed purpose through that effort.

The story was inspired by real events, although it is a dramatized feature rather than a documentary. Its focus on illness, uncertainty and the people who step forward to help gave Swank material rooted in recognizable human stakes.

Placed beside What They Had, the film shows care becoming a recurring subject in her post-hiatus work. Those roles do not reproduce her personal life, but they give audiences a way to understand the kinds of relationships she has been exploring.

Motherhood brought another change in her life

In April 2023, Swank announced that she and husband Philip Schneider had welcomed twins. She later publicly shared their names, Aya and Ohm, in a Valentine's Day post reported by ABC News.

The family milestone belongs in the timeline without turning it into an assumed explanation for every professional decision.

When she joined Yellowjackets, she was taking on her first project since giving birth, according to her March 2025 Vanity Fair interview. The role therefore marked both a new character and a return to a set after a major personal change.

Yellowjackets is her current television chapter

Swank joined Yellowjackets in its third season as the adult Melissa. The series follows survivors of a teenage soccer team's plane crash, moving between the wilderness experience and their later lives.

Her arrival introduced another adult perspective into a story built around memory, secrecy and the lasting consequences of survival.

Paramount's current season guide confirms that Swank returns for season four, which premieres November 20, 2026, and will conclude the series.

That premiere is still ahead of this update. For now, the picture is of an actress whose work has resumed through different formats after time devoted to family, with another substantial television performance about to continue.
