What Happened to Eva Mendes? Why She Stepped Away

Eva Mendes stepped away from movies while continuing business and creative work. Here's what she's said about family, her book and a possible return.

Eva Mendes matched Will Smith's charm with sharp skepticism as Sara Melas in Hitch.

Her life now looks different from the period when she appeared regularly in major movies. Mendes stepped away from film acting to spend more time with her children, while continuing business and creative work. Her projects have included a children's book, Skura Style and fashion campaigns.

She has discussed the possibility of acting again without announcing a definite return. As of November 2026, there is no confirmed new film role identified in the reporting reviewed for this article.

Hitch made Eva Mendes a familiar leading lady

In the 2005 romantic comedy Hitch, Mendes played a tabloid columnist whose relationship with a professional dating adviser becomes complicated by the story she is investigating.

Sony's official synopsis places Sara's curiosity and skepticism at the center of the romantic conflict. Mendes had to be a credible match for the film's confident title character, rather than simply someone waiting to be won over.

Her earlier and subsequent credits included Training Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious, We Own the Night and The Other Guys. Those films gave audiences different versions of her screen presence, from crime drama to broad comedy.

The familiarity created by that run helps explain why her long absence from new movies attracts questions. For many viewers, she remains associated with a period when seeing her in another release felt routine.

The Place Beyond the Pines offered a different kind of role

Mendes played Romina in Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines, opposite Ryan Gosling. The family and crime drama gave her a character whose life was shaped by decisions with consequences extending beyond a single relationship.

In a Focus Features interview about casting, Cianfrance said he had admired Mendes's work in We Own the Night. Rather than asking her for a conventional audition, he went on a drive with her around the Los Angeles places where she had grown up.

He described seeing qualities in her that he wanted to bring into the film. The account is a useful reminder that her career included performances built around emotional complexity, not just glamour.

She later appeared in Gosling's directorial debut, Lost River, in 2014. That remains her last feature-film acting appearance in the available reporting, although she subsequently contributed a voice cameo to Bluey.

She has explained why she stepped away

Mendes has repeatedly linked her decision to family life and the demands of location filming. In a 2024 Today interview, she explained that she continued working but chose work that did not require the same time away from her children.

Entertainment Tonight's report of the interview distinguishes her pause in acting from an end to all professional activity.

She also challenged the idea that she had formally quit. In a 2022 Instagram statement, quoted in CNN's reporting, she wrote, “I never quit acting.”

In the same statement, she said other business ventures gave her more flexibility to be home and expressed dissatisfaction with stereotypical roles she had been offered. Both considerations belong in the explanation.

That differs from Hilary Swank's family-related career break, which involved caring for her father. Their decisions have distinct circumstances, even though both actresses have described placing family needs ahead of a continuous filming schedule.

A children's book became a new way to tell stories

Mendes published Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries in September 2024. Illustrated by Abbey Bryant, the picture book follows a young girl whose fears become especially persistent at bedtime.

Publisher Macmillan describes a mother and daughter working together to understand and manage frightening thoughts. The story draws on Mendes's experience as a parent.

A Spanish edition, Desi, mami y las infinitas preocupaciones, also brought the story to Spanish-speaking families.

The book is a concrete example of what she has been doing away from film sets. It uses storytelling in a different setting, with a young reader and a parent sharing the experience rather than an audience watching a performance.

Its subject also fits the emphasis she has placed on home life. The creative work grew around that part of her life instead of requiring her to put it aside.

Skura Style and fashion kept her professionally active

Mendes became a co-owner of Skura Style in 2022. The cleaning-products company's official FAQ describes her involvement in product development, creative direction and brand representation.

Her connection began as a customer who liked the products and approached the founders, according to Architectural Digest's 2024 interview.

She also appeared in Stella McCartney's winter 2024 campaign alongside RAYE. These activities require public-facing creative work, but they have a different structure from taking a role in a feature film.

There is a useful comparison with Tracee Ellis Ross's work on Pattern: an actress's professional identity can include substantial business activity beyond her screen credits.

An acting return remains a possibility, not a confirmed project

Asked on Good Morning America in September 2024 whether she would act again, Mendes answered, “I don't know,” according to People's coverage.

That uncertainty should be preserved. Comments about enjoying past collaborations or considering the right role do not amount to a signed film announcement.

Her current public work is easier to describe with confidence: she has written for children, helped develop a business and continued selected fashion and promotional appearances. The long gap in movie roles is real, but it is only one part of the life she has chosen to build.
