In a remarkable survival story, a classic VW Bus weathered the flames of the recent Palisades Fire, capturing hearts worldwide. One iconic photo showed this vintage vehicle, affectionately named “Azul,” standing tall amid the charred landscape of Malibu.
The Palisades Fire ravaged the hills, but amid the gray and black rubble, a photographer from the Associated Press caught the VW Bus untouched. Millions saw it, including the folks at Volkswagen. “We wanted to reach out to the owner first and foremost and find out if they were OK,” said Nicole Redding, their communications specialist.
“If it wasn’t a Bus, I don’t know if that photo really would have resonated with so many people, because the Bus just makes people smile.”
With the owner’s approval, Volkswagen has decided to restore the classic vehicle to its former glory at their engineering center in Oxnard. The esteemed team responsible for maintaining historic vehicles will revive Azul, ensuring every component is as good as new.
Gunnar Wynarski, a Volkswagen technician, commented on the restoration process, noting that “the picture that went viral was from the driver’s side where it looked almost untouched… but on the other side you see melted parts.” They’ll replace all damaged components and even get rid of the lingering smell of smoke.
