In the proclamation, Trump claimed his administration has made Social Security “stronger and more resilient than ever before.” He credited legislative provisions from the recently passed Republican spending package, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, for delivering what he called “the largest tax break for seniors in the history of our country.”
According to the White House, the measure means “the vast majority” of seniors will pay zero taxes on their Social Security benefits. Officials also highlighted improved customer service, reduced call center wait times from 30 minutes to six minutes, and the elimination of disability claim backlogs. A spokesperson said more than 3.1 million payments totaling $17 billion have been delivered ahead of schedule this year.
White House Pushes Back Against Critics
Democrats have accused Trump of undermining the Social Security Administration through workforce cuts and policy changes. They argue the Republican plan could harm the program’s long-term stability. Trump’s team rejected those claims, citing efficiency gains, fraud prevention measures, and new safeguards to block ineligible recipients from receiving benefits.
“While Democrats flail and peddle lies about Social Security, President Trump is demonstrating his unbreakable commitment to protecting and strengthening this vital program for the nearly 72 million Americans who benefit from it,” White House spokesperson Liz Huston said in a statement .

Trump emphasized his administration’s efforts to prevent fraudulent and improper payments, including payments to deceased individuals. He pledged to continue protecting both Social Security and Medicare for future generations. “We recommit to strengthening our retirement system, protecting programs like Social Security and Medicare against fraud and abuse, and ensuring that every future generation of American citizens has the income security they need and earned,” the proclamation reads .
The anniversary comes at a politically charged moment, with Social Security’s future a key issue in the 2024 election. Trump’s proclamation signals his intent to campaign on protecting the program while highlighting tax relief as a major achievement for seniors.
