Bluebird: A Club for All Music and All Ages

Even in the digital age of always-on-demand music, there’s nothing quite like witnessing a band perform live on stage. The old Bluebird Nightclub on the corner of 7th Street and Walnut is still one of the best spots to catch a show in Bloomington.

“At the Bird, there’s a particular spirit,” explains Dave Kubiak, who has owned the club since 2004. The stage is in the corner, and the concert can be seen from different angles. You have the option of being right up close to the stage, eye-to-eye with the performer, or sitting further back for a broader perspective.”

The Bluebird, named after an ice cream business in Washington, Indiana, initially operated as a bar and dinner in 1973.

Original owner John Ross opened the rear room as a music venue a year later, and the club hosted mostly regional and national jazz acts during the 1970s. By the early 1980s, the club had expanded its lineup to include rock, funk, reggae, and other genres.

Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Damian Marley, Kings of Leon, and John Mayer, to mention a few, have all performed at the Bluebird in the early stages of their careers. Local and regional actions are also given priority, according to Kubiak.

We would like to provide a chance for a Bloomington band or an Indiana University student with a band to open for more significant acts. “It’s an excellent chance for up-and-coming musicians in the area.

One of Bluebird’s major selling features, according to Kubiak, is its varied, all-inclusive environment. You may witness an alternative country act, a bluegrass band, a rising indie singer/songwriter, novelty bands like Here Come the Mummies (men costumed as mummies playing music), and sing karaoke on any given night.

Kubiak describes the Bird as a “melting pot” where “everyone may go and have a wonderful time.” “People of all ages may come and just enjoy the music, whether they’re college students, in their forties or fifties, or retirees.”
