A deadly mystery virus has rapidly claimed over 50 lives in northwestern Congo, alarming health officials and the World Health Organization (WHO). The outbreak began in the town of Boloko, where three children reportedly ate a bat and died within 48 hours.
Since then, the disease has spread at an alarming rate, with 419 recorded cases and 53 deaths so far.

However, preliminary tests have ruled out these common viruses, leaving researchers scrambling to identify the cause. “That’s what’s really worrying,” said Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, a regional monitoring center.
The outbreak’s impact extends beyond public health, raising fears of another devastating epidemic in the region. Congo has battled repeated disease outbreaks in recent years, including Ebola, typhoid, and malaria.
The WHO has warned that Africa has seen a 60% increase in animal-to-human disease spillovers in the past decade. Given the virus’s rapid transmission and unknown origin, experts fear it could lead to severe consequences if not contained quickly.
The latest outbreak has taken a new turn, with a second wave emerging in Bomate on Feb. 9. Samples from 13 patients were sent to the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Kinshasa for testing.
While some samples tested positive for malaria, all tested negative for known hemorrhagic fever viruses. This leaves scientists with an unsettling question—what exactly is causing this outbreak?
Last year, a similar mystery illness swept through another region of Congo, killing 143 people before being linked to malaria. However, the current outbreak appears more aggressive, and health officials remain cautious about drawing conclusions too soon. “We need to understand the source and mode of transmission before we can contain it,” said a WHO spokesperson.
Congo has struggled with multiple health crises, including an ongoing mpox outbreak with more than 47,000 suspected cases and over 1,000 deaths. With healthcare resources already stretched thin, an unidentified virus with a high fatality rate poses an even greater challenge.
As researchers race to uncover the origins of this deadly disease, the mystery surrounding it only deepens. Is this another zoonotic spillover, or could it be a newly emerging virus with pandemic potential? Health officials are urging caution, but until they identify the cause, the threat remains unpredictable.
