After over three decades behind bars for the 1989 shotgun killings of their parents, Erik and Lyle Menendez are now eligible for parole following a California judge’s resentencing decision. The ruling changes their sentence from life without parole to 50 years to life, making them immediately eligible to go before the state parole board.
The decision follows months of debate and emotional testimonies. Supporters including family members and a retired judge — cited the brothers’ rehabilitation and transformation during their time in prison. Both Erik, 54, and Lyle, 57, expressed deep remorse, with Lyle stating, “I am deeply ashamed of who I was.” Erik added, “I am directly responsible for it all.”
A former district attorney supported their resentencing, but current prosecutor Nathan Hochman opposed it, saying the brothers had not fully acknowledged past deceptions. The parole board will now assess their release suitability, with a clemency recommendation expected by June 13. Governor Gavin Newsom will have final review authority.
