On a freezing day in January 1972, the seemingly impossible happened. Vesna Vulović, a Yugoslav Airlines flight attendant, was on board a routine flight when tragedy struck.
The DC-9 she was working on exploded miles above the Earth, sending it plunging over the snowy landscapes of Czechoslovakia. What should have been a fatal fall from 33, 000 feet became a testament to human resilience and a journey into the pages of history. Vesna’s tale of survival is nothing short of extraordinary.
Out of 28 passengers and crew, she was the sole survivor after the aircraft disintegrated mid-air due to a suspected bomb explosion during a layover in Copenhagen. However, no arrests were ever made, and the mystery of the explosion remains unresolved.
Trapped in the aircraft’s tail section, Vesna plummeted in sub-zero temperatures, landing on a hillside cushioned by snow and trees, which absorbed much of the impact. She was eventually found by a local who heard her cries. Her injuries were severe: a fractured skull, two broken vertebrae which led to temporary paralysis, and numerous other severe injuries. Yet, against all odds, Vesna survived. Following a 10-day coma, she awoke with no memory of the crash.
Her recollection of the event only extends to the moments before the flight, leaving an eerie gap in her mind. Surviving such a fall earned her a place in the Guinness Book of Records in 1985 for surviving the highest fall without a parachute. Interestingly, Vesna herself did not consider her survival as ‘lucky’; she believed it caused a ripple of sorrow in her personal life, affecting her family deeply. Vesna Vulović became a national heroine in Yugoslavia, later shifting her focus to protest the political regime of Slobodan Milosevic during the 1990s.
Her story is an enduring symbol of human endurance and the unyielding spirit to survive against all odds, worthy of reflection and discussion. It remains a tale that fascinates aeronautics experts and survivalists alike, reminding us of the unpredictable nature of life, and how, sometimes, the miraculous becomes reality.
