Stephanie Turner, a 31-year-old women’s fencer, made headlines for taking a bold stand against USA Fencing’s gender eligibility policy. The incident occurred at the Cherry Blossom Open in Maryland over the weekend when Turner kneeled in front of her transgender opponent, Redmond Sullivan, refusing to compete.
Her act was planned and executed with the intention of making a statement that would be seen and heard by many.
Turner had prepared for the event like any other, completing her warm-ups and competing in four bouts before the match with Sullivan. But when the time came, she chose to kneel and decline the bout.
“I am a woman, and this is a man, and this is a women’s tournament. And I will not fence this individual.”

Her decision was not impulsive; it was something she had considered the night before after discovering she would be competing against Sullivan. Turner wanted her stance to be clear and documented.
The impact of Turner’s decision was immediate. She was given a black card, the most severe penalty in fencing, which leads to expulsion from the event. Turner was then escorted to the bout committee, required to explain her actions, and eventually handed a copy of USA Fencing’s transgender policy.
She was asked to sign a document acknowledging her disqualification, which she did under protest. According to USA Fencing, her disqualification was due to her refusal to fence Sullivan, not her stance on transgender inclusion.
The organization emphasized that refusing to compete against any properly entered athlete is prohibited under International Fencing Federation (FIE) rules.
USA Fencing’s transgender policy, implemented in 2023, aims to create inclusive and safe spaces for all athletes. It allows transgender women to compete in women’s events after completing a year of testosterone suppression treatment, provided they offer proof of compliant hormone therapy before competition.
“According to the FIE Technical Rules, specifically Article t.113, a fencer is not permitted to refuse to fence another properly entered fencer for any reason. Under these rules, such a refusal results in disqualification and the corresponding sanctions. This policy exists to maintain fair competition standards and preserve the sport’s integrity.”

“It will probably, at least for a moment, destroy my life. I don’t think that it’s going to be easy for me from now on going to fencing tournaments.”

“I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to give it to God. If this person shows up to my event and is on my script, then I would take a knee, and that would be God’s will.”
