What Happened on Martha’s Vineyard?
On Sunday, July 23, 2023, Campbell went paddleboarding in Edgartown Great Pond, a saltwater pond near the Obamas’ estate in Martha’s Vineyard. He was with another unnamed paddleboarder when the accident occurred.
At around 7:46 p.m., emergency services received a 911 call reporting a paddleboarder in distress. According to Massachusetts State Police, Campbell fell off his board and struggled to stay afloat before going under. The other paddleboarder tried to reach him but couldn’t. That person swam to shore and got help.

The search began that night and continued into the next morning with divers, aerial teams, and sonar equipment. By 10 a.m. on Monday, Campbell’s body was recovered about 100 feet from shore, submerged in water approximately 8 feet deep.
According to some reports of the MSP, a second person who has not been named was with Campbell when the event unfolded.

- He drowned in water 7–8 feet deep, not shallow water.
- A 911 call was made shortly after he went under, not hours later.
- The autopsy was performed by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, not by a private or Obama-connected coroner.
Police concluded there were no signs of foul play, and the autopsy supported that conclusion.
Was There Really a Tell-All Book?
One of the most viral claims was that Campbell was writing a book that would expose the Obamas. But again, there’s no evidence for this. The idea appears to have started with a single tweet and spiraled into a full-blown theory.

Some questioned why Campbell, who posted about learning to swim, was paddleboarding at all. In a 2017 Instagram post, he used the hashtag #stillcantswim, and a later post showed him practicing beginner strokes with the hashtags #Progress and #survivalskills.
Authorities later confirmed that Campbell was not wearing a life jacket, nor was he tethered to his paddleboard. These missing safety precautions likely contributed to the accident, regardless of his swimming ability.
