China Executes 11 Members of Ming Family After Billion Dollar Online Scam and Murder Convictions

China has executed 11 members of a powerful mafia family after courts upheld convictions tied to murder and a massive scam network.

China Executes 11 Members of Ming Family After Billion Dollar Online Scam and Murder Convictions

China has carried out the executions of 11 members of the Ming family, a criminal network authorities say ran one of the largest scam operations in the region. The executions followed rejected appeals after the group was convicted of murder, fraud, illegal detention, and operating a billion dollar scam network.

Chinese courts found that members of the Ming family were responsible for killing at least 14 Chinese citizens. Prosecutors also said the group held people against their will and forced them to work in online scam operations that targeted victims across Asia.

A Scam Network Built on Online Romance

According to court findings, the Ming family began its criminal operations around 2015. The group lured victims through online relationships and then convinced them to invest in fake cryptocurrency schemes. Authorities said the operation generated more than one billion dollars in revenue each year.

The scam centers operated mainly out of northern Myanmar near the Chinese border. Victims were often Chinese speakers who believed they were forming real romantic relationships before being defrauded.

Violence and Forced Labor Inside the Operation

Testimony presented in court revealed extreme violence inside the scam compounds. People who were kidnapped and forced to work there described regular beatings and torture. Armed guards controlled the area and escape attempts were often punished.

The United Nations has estimated that hundreds of thousands of people have been trafficked across Southeast Asia to operate online scam centers. Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos have all been identified as major hubs for this activity.

Collapse of the Ming Family Empire

The Ming family network began to collapse in 2023 after regional pressure and coordinated arrests. Chinese authorities said the head of the family, Ming Xuechang, died by suicide during arrest operations to avoid facing prosecution.

More than 20 additional family members received prison sentences in September. Those sentences ranged from five years to life in prison. Some defendants confessed in court and expressed remorse, according to state media.

China Pushes Back Against Border Scams

China has increased pressure on neighboring regions to shut down scam operations that target Chinese citizens. Frustrated by Myanmar’s limited enforcement, China supported an ethnic insurgent alliance that launched an offensive in Shan State in late 2023.

That alliance seized territory from Myanmar’s military and took control of Laukkaing, a key border town long linked to criminal activity. Chinese officials say the crackdown reflects a broader commitment to dismantling scam networks operating near its borders.

A Warning From Beijing

Chinese authorities framed the executions as a warning to organized crime groups operating overseas. Officials said severe punishment would continue for those who exploit citizens through fraud and violence.

The case has drawn international attention as governments and human rights groups continue to debate how best to combat cross border scam networks that rely on trafficking and digital deception.
