A family in North Carolina is celebrating an emotional reunion after their cat vanished during Hurricane Helene and returned home more than a year later.
The cat, named Gabby, went missing when the deadly storm tore through the Southeast in September 2024. For 443 days, her family had no idea if she was alive.
That changed just days before Christmas.
A Breakthrough at a North Carolina Shelter
On Dec. 13, Gabby was brought to the Avery Humane Society in Newland, North Carolina, after being found as a stray.
Shelter staff scanned the cat and discovered she had a microchip. With some research, they learned Gabby had been reported missing after Hurricane Helene.
The shelter shared the news in a Facebook post that quickly spread online.
“After all that time, she is finally back where she belongs,” the shelter wrote.
Lost in One of America’s Deadliest Storms
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida on Sept. 26, 2024, before tearing through six states. It became the second deadliest storm to hit the United States in the past 20 years.
More than 250 people were killed, with North Carolina suffering the highest number of fatalities.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Helene caused catastrophic flooding and widespread destruction across the region.

‘A Christmas Miracle,’ Social Media Says
News of Gabby’s return sparked an emotional response online. Many commenters called the reunion a “Christmas miracle.”
“I’m not crying, you’re crying,” one user wrote. Others described the story as a beautiful and rare happy ending after tragedy.
The family was reunited with Gabby just days after the shelter identified her microchip.
A Reminder About Microchipping Pets
The Avery Humane Society used Gabby’s story to encourage pet owners to microchip their animals and keep contact information updated.
“That small step can make the difference between heartbreak and a happy reunion,” the shelter said.
After more than a year apart, Gabby’s family got their miracle. It started with a microchip and ended with a homecoming no one expected.
For many still recovering from Hurricane Helene, the story offered something rare. It offered hope.
