A curious California kitten needed professional help after crawling into an entertainment center and becoming trapped inside the cabinet.
Firefighters from Ventura County Fire Department Engine 50 responded to the home in Camarillo and carefully freed the kitten, named Suki, without causing any apparent injuries.
Video of the unusual rescue later became a social media hit, attracting millions of views and a wave of appreciative comments.
Suki Became Trapped Inside the Cabinet
Suki had reportedly lived with her new family for only a few weeks when her curiosity led her into trouble.
The small kitten crawled partway through an opening in the entertainment center but could not find a way back out. Her family eventually called for help when they were unable to safely free her.
Three firefighters responded to the animal-in-distress call and examined the cabinet before attempting the rescue.
Footage shared by the Ventura County Fire Department showed the crew working around the trapped kitten while trying to avoid frightening or injuring her.
Firefighters Carefully Lowered the Entertainment Center
The firefighters began by removing the audio and video equipment stored inside the cabinet. Clearing the equipment gave them more room to work and reduced the risk of something falling during the rescue.
They then gently lowered the entertainment center into a position that provided better access to the opening where Suki was stuck.
After carefully working around the kitten, the crew successfully pulled her free.
Suki appeared unharmed and was immediately returned to her relieved family. The fire department did not report any injuries to the kitten or the firefighters.
Rescue Video Attracts Millions of Views
The rescue quickly found a large audience online. According to the fire department, a version of the video posted on TikTok received more than 7 million views.
Viewers praised the firefighters for treating the small emergency seriously. Some also shared stories about their own cats becoming trapped behind appliances, inside furniture and in other difficult spaces.
One commenter expressed approval of firefighters responding to the animal emergency, writing, “I 100 approve this use of my tax dollars.”
Another jokingly suggested traveling to Ventura County and getting stuck inside an entertainment center to receive the same attention from the firefighters.
The department thanked photographer Erin Garcia for helping share Suki’s story and said the rescue demonstrated its commitment to serving the community.
Engine 50 Serves the Camarillo Area
Ventura County Fire Station 50 serves western Camarillo, the Camarillo Airport and nearby unincorporated communities on the Oxnard Plain.
The station houses Engine 50 along with aircraft rescue, hazardous-materials and paramedic equipment. Its crew handles a wide range of emergencies, although calls involving kittens trapped in furniture are far less common than its usual work.
How Families Can Protect Curious Kittens
Suki’s experience also offers a reminder that young cats can enter surprisingly small spaces while exploring a new home.
The ASPCA recommends pet-proofing homes before bringing home a kitten. Owners can inspect rooms from a small animal’s perspective, secure electrical cords and keep cabinets closed.
Families should also check for openings behind furniture, cupboards and appliances. Blocking those gaps can prevent a kitten from becoming trapped or reaching electrical wiring and other hazards.
If a pet becomes stuck, owners should avoid pulling the animal by force when doing so could cause an injury. Depending on the circumstances, they can contact a veterinarian, animal-control agency or local emergency service for guidance.
For Suki, the unexpected adventure ended safely. She returned to her family while the firefighters who rescued her became the stars of a viral video seen around the country.
