Former President Barack Obama announced his family dog Sunny’s death, sharing memories of their 13 years together.

In a social media tribute posted Wednesday, September 16, Obama said Sunny had died the previous day. The Portuguese Water Dog joined the family during his second term in the White House.

“Yesterday, we lost a cherished member of our family,” Obama wrote in the announcement, which was reported by Parade.

"Daddy's home!

A Playful White House Companion

Obama remembered Sunny as an energetic companion who kept the family moving. She would jump over hedges on the South Lawn while chasing birds, squirrels and anything else that caught her attention.

While the family’s first dog, Bo, could usually be won over with treats, Sunny preferred playing, running around and having her belly rubbed.

She was affectionate with the couple’s daughters, even when they interrupted her naps. Obama also recalled how she followed members of the family’s team as they worked.

Thirteen Years With the Family

Sunny arrived in 2013, joining Bo as the Obamas’ second Portuguese Water Dog.

An archived White House introduction records that she was born in Michigan in June 2012. That birth date puts her age at 14, distinct from the 13 years she spent with the family.

The introduction also explained that the breed suited the household because of allergies within the family.

A Protective Bond With Bo

Obama described Sunny as especially protective of Bo. Although she generally preferred human company to other dogs, he was the exception.

The tribute also celebrated her quirks. She drank noisily and disliked getting wet, despite belonging to a breed with “water” in its name.

Obama closed by remembering a loyal, affectionate companion who remained ready for adventure throughout her life. He imagined Sunny reunited with Bo, once again looking after him.
