Christina Hendricks made Joan’s composure in Mad Men feel like both a professional skill and a form of survival.
Her career continued well beyond that office. She led Good Girls, voiced Gabby Gabby in Toy Story 4, and more recently appeared in The Buccaneers, Hacks and Good American Family.
As of November 2026, The Buccaneers has been renewed for a third season. Hendricks’s recent roles show an actor moving between period drama, dark comedy and stories based on real events, while Joan remains a character she remembers with affection.
Joan changed the opportunities that came her way
Hendricks’s performance in Mad Men earned repeated Emmy nominations and made her one of the series’ defining actors. The Television Academy’s profile records the recognition attached to her portrayal.
Joan understood the advertising office’s rules, including the unwritten ones. Hendricks could show her using that knowledge while also revealing the cost of working within a system that underestimated her.
In a 2025 interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly, Hendricks described a clear difference between her career before and after Joan. Auditions became more respectful, and more interesting scripts reached her.
“It changed my entire career. It changed my entire life,” she said of Mad Men.
That is an explanation of the role’s importance from the actor herself. Its impact was not simply that more people recognized her; it altered the opportunities she could consider next.

Good Girls gave her another long-running character
Hendricks later starred as Beth Boland in Good Girls, alongside Retta and Mae Whitman. The series followed suburban women whose financial desperation drew them into crime.
Beth’s growing involvement in that world gave Hendricks a different kind of authority to play. Domestic responsibilities, deception and criminal ambition collided, often within the same scene.
The series ran for four seasons before NBC canceled it in 2021. TVLine’s report confirmed that it would not move to Netflix for a fifth season.
That ending is important context for viewers who lost track of Hendricks afterward. A show’s cancellation ends a particular role; it does not by itself explain an actor’s subsequent career.
Good Girls also established a second substantial television identity for her. Beth was a contemporary mother navigating crime, rather than Joan in a carefully ordered period workplace.
Animation and comedy widened the range
In Toy Story 4, Hendricks voiced Gabby Gabby, a vintage pull-string doll. Disney’s introduction to the character announced her alongside other additions to the franchise in 2019.
Voice work removes the costume, posture and facial expression that viewers associate with a screen actor. The character must emerge through the voice, supported by the animation around it.
For audiences who knew Hendricks mainly from adult television dramas, Gabby Gabby offered another way to encounter her work. Children could hear her performance without knowing anything about Joan or Beth.
She later joined the guest cast of Hacks for its third season in 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement also named Helen Hunt, whose recent career includes television and directing.
Together, those credits demonstrate how Hendricks has alternated continuing series work with shorter appearances and animation.
The Buccaneers returned her to period drama
In The Buccaneers, Hendricks plays Patricia “Patti” St. George. The Apple series, inspired by Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, places American newcomers within the social expectations of 1870s England.
The younger women’s romances drive much of the story, but Patti has her own conflicts. Season two follows her effort to divorce her husband, making her more than a parent observing the next generation’s adventures.
TV Insider’s interview with the cast discusses the courtroom episode in which Nan returns to America to support her mother. The storyline brings several women’s relationships into the same confrontation.
Hendricks told The Australian Women’s Weekly that Patti’s initial confidence gives way to a much more difficult experience. The role asks her to show the gap between a woman’s determination and the public resistance she encounters.
Apple announced a third season in October 2025. That renewal establishes the series’ continuation; it should not be mistaken for an announcement that the next season has already premiered.

Good American Family required rapid preparation
Hendricks played Cynthia Mans in the 2025 Hulu drama Good American Family. The series also stars Ellen Pompeo, who took on the project after reducing her regular Grey’s Anatomy workload.
Hendricks told Us Weekly that she was cast just 30 hours before arriving on set. Preparation therefore had to happen quickly.
She described reading scripts, watching documentary material about Natalia Grace’s story and working with a dialect coach. Fittings and other practical preparation were compressed into the same short window.
The account offers a concrete glimpse of acting work that audiences rarely see. A character who arrives fully formed on screen may have been assembled through an intense period of research, coaching and decisions immediately before filming.
Because the series dramatizes real people and disputed accounts, its scenes should be understood as a production’s portrayal, rather than treated as independent documentary evidence.
Her life beyond Joan includes a personal milestone
Hendricks married camera operator George Bianchini in New Orleans on April 20, 2024. People’s wedding report placed the ceremony at the city’s historic Napoleon House.
That public milestone sits alongside an active period of work, rather than replacing it. Her recent credits span a recurring role in a period ensemble, a comedy guest appearance and a limited-series character requiring fast preparation.
Joan remains central to how many viewers remember Hendricks. But Beth, Patti, Cynthia and Gabby Gabby show the range of work that followed, giving audiences several different places to find her after Mad Men.
