On a chilling winter day in January 1972, a tragedy unfolded in the sky. JAT Flight 367, gliding miles above Czechoslovakia, suddenly erupted into a ball of fire. However, one woman’s fate was written in the stars—Vesna Vulović, a young flight attendant, was about to face the unthinkable.
The plane disintegrated after a bomb exploded in the baggage compartment. The wreckage plummeted towards the snowy mountains below, while Vesna’s tale took a miraculous turn. Trapped in a food cart, within the tail section of the aircraft, she plummeted to the earth. She fell to a snow-blanketed and forested area, which fortunately cushioned her fall.
From an altitude of 33,000 feet—the highest recorded fall without a parachute—Vesna emerged as the sole survivor of this catastrophic incident, defying all odds and expectations.
Rescued by a compassionate woodsman who stumbled upon the crash, she was discovered alive yet gravely injured. She fell into a coma for nearly 10 days, with a fractured skull, broken vertebrae, shattered legs, ribs, and pelvis.
Vulović made an almost complete recovery. However, she continued to walk with a limp. Vulovic had little to no memory of the mid-air explosion and her survival. So, she had no fear of flying in the aftermath of the crash. As much as she wanted to resume her career as a flight attendant, Jat Airways (JAT) gave her a desk job.
When news of her miraculous escape reached the world, people were both stunned and inspired. How could anyone endure such a fall and live to tell the tale? Vesna’s journey of recovery was long and filled with setbacks, yet her spirit remained indomitable.
In recognition of her incredible ordeal, the Guinness World Records honored her in 1985, featuring her as the record holder for surviving the highest fall without a parachute.
On December 23, 2016 and at the age 66, Vesna passed away in Belgrade, Serbia.
Yet, it was not just the physical injuries that Vesna had to overcome. The survivor’s guilt weighed heavily on her heart, a constant reminder of the lives lost that grim day. Her story became emblematic of resilience and survival—an extraordinary testament to the tenacity of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.
