This Sailor Survived 133 Days Alone at Sea During World War II Fighting Sharks And Dehydration!

Imagine being tossed into the vast, unforgiving ocean with nothing but a life jacket and a makeshift raft. Now, picture surviving that way for 133 days. Sounds like a plot twist from a survival thriller, right?

But for Poon Lim, this was his reality. In November 1942, during World War II, Poon Lim was serving as a steward on the British merchant ship SS Benlomond. While en route from Cape Town to Suriname, the ship was ambushed by a German U-boat.

Two torpedoes struck, and within minutes, the Benlomond was sinking. Poon Lim, along with 53 others, was thrown into the Atlantic’s cold embrace. Miraculously, he was the sole survivor. Clinging to a life raft, Poon Lim found himself adrift with limited supplies: a 40-liter jug of water, tins of biscuits, chocolate, sugar, flares, and a flashlight.

Resourceful as ever, he fashioned fishing hooks from the raft’s nails and used rope for lines. He even crafted a knife from a biscuit tin. Rainwater became his lifeline, collected using a canvas life jacket. When hunger struck, he turned to the ocean’s bounty, catching fish and even drying seabirds for sustenance. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months.

Poon Lim battled sunburn, dehydration, and the crushing weight of isolation. He counted the days by tying knots in a rope, but as time wore on, he switched to counting full moons. His only company? The occasional shark circling his raft.

Once, he even caught a shark, using its liver blood to quench his thirst when fresh water was scarce. After 133 grueling days, Poon Lim’s ordeal ended when three Brazilian fishermen spotted his raft off the coast of Pará. Weak and emaciated, he was lifted aboard their vessel. He had lost 20 pounds but was alive.

The fishermen provided him with food and water, and after a brief stay in a Brazilian hospital, Poon Lim was fit to travel. Back in the UK, Poon Lim’s story became legendary. King George VI awarded him the British Empire Medal for his extraordinary courage and resourcefulness. His tale was incorporated into Royal Navy survival manuals, serving as a testament to human resilience.

Poon Lim’s survival record remains unbroken. When asked about his feat, he humbly replied, ‘I hope no one will have to break it.’ His story continues to inspire, reminding us of the indomitable human spirit and the will to survive against all odds.
