The U.S. and Iran are moving closer to renewing nuclear discussions that had long seemed stalled. After months of silence, American and Iranian officials are now entering a third round of indirect nuclear talks in Oman. The talks follow what U.S. officials described as “very good progress” in the previous two rounds.
This new round of talks was confirmed by the U.S. State Department and follows meetings held earlier this year. While the first two rounds in early 2024 were kept quiet, a senior State Department official has now confirmed that “we will be having a third meeting soon.” According to Fox News Digital, this third round also aims to address issues beyond just Iran’s nuclear program.
The stakes are high. Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium is now 30 times higher than the limits set by the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Experts warn that Iran could produce enough weapons-grade uranium in just two weeks. The outcome of these discussions could impact not only U.S.-Iran relations but also global oil prices, nuclear proliferation risks, and tensions across the Middle East.
What’s surprising is the sudden shift in tone from both nations. Iran, under President Ebrahim Raisi, had shown limited interest in talks after the U.S. exited the JCPOA in 2018 under former President Donald Trump. But now, despite ongoing regional tensions—including Iran’s support for groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis—both sides seem to be cautiously engaging.
The first two rounds took place in the Sultanate of Oman earlier this year. While those meetings were indirect—mediated through Oman—they laid groundwork for renewed dialogue. The U.S. official added, “We were able to have a constructive exchange, and we’re looking forward to building on that.”
At the heart of the issue is Iran’s nuclear program, which has advanced significantly in recent years. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran now has over 120 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60%, which is near weapons-grade level. The JCPOA had previously capped enrichment at 3.67%.
Aside from nuclear matters, the talks also touch on U.S. sanctions relief and Iran’s missile capabilities. These broader issues make the negotiations more complex. Still, American diplomats remain hopeful, suggesting that both sides may be seeking a form of limited agreement, rather than a full return to the original deal.
The Biden administration is trying to balance pressure and diplomacy. While keeping sanctions in place, the U.S. has also made indirect humanitarian efforts, like facilitating the release of frozen Iranian funds for food and medicine purchases. Such moves may have helped create space for dialogue.
Iran’s position remains firm on some points. They want all sanctions lifted and are skeptical about U.S. promises. Yet recent reports suggest that back-channel communication has grown more frequent and less confrontational. That, according to analysts, could signal a softening—if only temporary—on both sides.
