President Donald Trump signed executive orders Monday aimed at ending cashless bail for suspects arrested in the nation’s capital and across the country.
The move directly challenges jurisdictions that have adopted policies allowing suspects to be released without posting bail.
According to a fact sheet provided by the White House to NBC News, the executive order directs federal agencies to pressure Washington, D.C. to abandon its cashless bail policy. If the city refuses, the administration could reconsider “federal funding decisions, services, or approvals.”
The fact sheet also notes that Attorney General Pam Bondi could play a role in enforcing the order, although it does not specify what actions she may take. Trump’s directive further asks law enforcement officials to ensure suspects arrested in the city are transferred into federal custody “to the fullest extent permissible under applicable law.”
