Recently, the Trump administration announced plans for a ‘weighted selection process’ for H-1B visas linking allocations to the salaries offered to foreign workers. This move is already raising eyebrows, especially among those entering their professional careers. Worker advocate Doug Rand emphasized, “They are moving fast, so that could happen within the calendar year.”
This proposal follows a similar rule enacted just before Biden took office, which prioritized higher-paid positions. Under that plan, H-1B visas tended to go to Level 4 earners first, essentially freezing out new professionals—those that typically start at Level 1 or Level 2 salary brackets.
