In the summer of 2014, a quiet village named Olom in Russia’s Sakha Republic became the center of a story that shocked and moved the world. It involved a little girl named Karina Chikitova, just four years old at the time, and her loyal dog Naida. What happened to her is almost impossible to believe—a real-life survival story that feels like something straight out of a movie.
Karina lived in a remote village surrounded by dense Siberian forest. With only a handful of families in the area and no proper roads or cell service, life was simple but harsh. On one warm August day, Karina was playing outside, watched over by her grandmother while her mother did chores in the hayloft. The family often let her play freely near the house because she never strayed far.
But that day, something unusual happened. Karina saw her father walking away from the village and decided to follow him. She didn’t tell anyone. Her father, unaware that his daughter was behind him, left without realizing he was being followed. Soon, Karina lost sight of him and wandered deep into the Siberian wilderness—with only one companion: Naida, the family dog.
Back home, her family didn’t realize she was missing at first. Her mother and grandmother assumed she was with her father. Her father thought she had stayed behind. That misunderstanding cost them valuable time. By the time they realized no one knew where she was, Karina had already spent hours lost in the forest.
The Siberian taiga is not a forgiving place. Even in summer, nighttime temperatures can fall below freezing. The region is home to bears, wolves, and swamps. Yet, somehow, Karina survived—thanks in large part to Naida.
Every night, the dog curled up next to Karina to keep her warm. She made a bed out of long grass and used bushes for shelter. She drank from rivers and ate wild berries to stay alive. For nine nights, Naida stayed by her side, offering comfort and protection. But when it became clear no one was coming, Naida made a decision. She left Karina and returned to the village.
When the dog arrived alone, everyone feared the worst. But her return gave rescuers a small glimmer of hope: maybe Karina was still alive. A team of 100 people, including local volunteers and emergency crews, had already been searching day and night. Helicopters scanned the forests, but the area was too large and too wild. Every day that passed made it harder to believe the girl could survive. Still, they followed Naida into the woods.
At first, Naida led them to a swamp but couldn’t pinpoint Karina’s location. Days passed. On the twelfth day, hope was running out. But then, something happened.
Rescuer Artyom Borisov was walking through tall grass when he spotted something. At first, he thought it was an animal. But then he saw a small tuft of hair. He moved closer, parting the grass. There, curled up silently, was Karina.
“She was completely quiet. She saw me and stretched her arms forward. I picked her up. She was so tiny, so light, like fluff. She didn’t have shoes on. Her face, arms, and legs were covered in mosquito bites. She was scared, but the first thing she did was ask for water and food. Then she burst into tears. Honestly, I could hardly hold back tears too.”
Borisov said later.
She was rushed to a hospital where doctors treated her for dehydration and exhaustion. She weighed barely 10 kilograms. Despite the trauma, she recovered well. The dog had not only kept her warm and safe from predators but had also played a critical role in leading rescuers to her.
When Karina was reunited with Naida, her first words to the dog were, “Why did you leave me?” She didn’t understand then that Naida had gone to get help and had saved her life. Over time, she would come to realize it.
After the rescue, Karina’s story became famous. The media called her the “real-life Mowgli,” comparing her to the character from The Jungle Book. A statue of her and Naida was erected in Yakutsk, the coldest city in the world, to honor their story. A children’s book and even a film were created about her experience.
Karina moved to Yakutsk and studied at the region’s professional ballet school. She even won a Mini Miss pageant. But recently, now aged 14, she appeared on Russian television and revealed she wants to become a doctor instead of a ballerina.
During the interview, she said she doesn’t remember anything about those 12 days.
“This is my dog Naida. She was with me in the forest, but I no longer remember how I played with her.”
