A Ukrainian refugee’s dream of safety in the US was shattered in a brutal, random attack on a Charlotte train. Iryna Zarutska, 23, who fled war-torn Ukraine for a better life, was fatally stabbed last month by Decarlos Brown Jr. in what authorities call a senseless act caught on video. Now, the Justice Department under the Trump Administration has filed federal charges that could mean the death penalty for Brown.
The incident occurred on August 22, 2025, at a Charlotte light rail station on the Lynx Blue Line.
“Iryna came here to escape violence, only to meet it in the worst way,” her family wrote on GoFundMe, pleading for support.
Public outrage has been swift, with local activist Maria Hinojosa calling it “a tragic failure of safety on public transport” on social media, echoing the anger of many.
