Rocco Morabito’s photograph of one utility worker resuscitating another won the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography. Known as The Kiss of Life, it captured a rescue high above a Jacksonville street in 1967.
Randall Champion had received an electric shock while working on a pole. His colleague J.D. Thompson reached him and provided mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while Champion remained supported by his safety equipment. Champion survived.
The Pulitzer organization lists Morabito of the Jacksonville Journal as the 1968 winner for the photograph. The famous image records a real rescue, and its publication helped carry the scene far beyond the workers’ Florida community.
