Six men working on a cemetery detail in Polk County, Georgia, helped their supervising deputy when he suffered a medical emergency in June 2017. Their response brought help to a man they worked alongside regularly.
Contemporaneous reporting said the men used his phone to seek emergency assistance and helped remove equipment while waiting for responders. Sheriff Johnny Moats subsequently announced plans to give them credit toward their sentences. The deputy’s family also thanked them with food.
Accounts sometimes present the incident as a narrowly avoided escape. The documented action is that the men stayed and helped a distressed deputy. Their precise opportunities or intentions cannot be inferred from the equipment available.
