A GTB hospital death has sparked anger after a ceiling fan allegedly fell on a patient’s bed.
A 42-year-old patient died hours after a ceiling fan allegedly fell on him inside the emergency ward of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Delhi.
The patient, identified as Md Akbar, had been admitted to the hospital on July 18 with serious medical problems, including hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia, according to hospital sources cited by PTI.
The incident reportedly happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday while Akbar was receiving treatment in emergency ward 27.
Fan Allegedly Fell During Treatment
Hospital staff told local media that a nursing officer was administering treatment when the ceiling fan detached and fell near or onto the patient’s bed.
A male nurse also sustained injuries and received medical care, according to hospital sources cited by PTI.
The hospital later said a preliminary inspection found that the fan fell after its shaft fractured.

Hospital Says Death Was Due to Existing Illness
GTB Hospital said Akbar’s death was caused by his existing medical condition, not by the ceiling fan incident.
In a statement cited by PTI, the hospital said the patient had been admitted unconscious with uncontrolled hypertension, stroke or encephalopathy, aspiration pneumonia and respiratory failure.
The hospital said the fan incident and the patient’s death were being reviewed. It also said further details would come after an official report.

Family and Witnesses Demand Answers
Akbar’s family has demanded an inquiry into the incident.
An eyewitness, advocate Muhammad Aslam Qureshi, told PTI that he saw the ceiling fan fall on the patient. He disputed claims that the fan only injured a nurse.
Other attendants in the ward also alleged that the fan fell on Akbar’s bed.
The conflicting accounts have added pressure on hospital officials to explain what happened, how the fan detached, and whether maintenance checks were missed.
