Morgan County Undersheriff Jon Horton told Denver7 that the crash happened at around 10:40 a.m. when a Cessna 172 was on its final descent and struck by an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300. The impact caused one of the planes to catch fire, with smoke and flames rising high into the sky, while the second aircraft sustained major damage.
Victims and Injuries
The victim, who has not yet been identified, was a passenger in the Extra EA300. The other person in that plane survived but was hospitalized with unknown injuries, Horton said. Two people aboard the Cessna 172 suffered only minor injuries and were able to walk away from the wreckage.
The collision forced Fort Morgan Municipal Airport to temporarily close as crews worked to secure the area and assist survivors.
Federal Investigation
Morgan County Sheriff David Martin said deputies searched through the wreckage while federal agencies began their probe. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed they are investigating the fatal crash. Officials have not yet determined the cause.
