The Social Security Administration will issue commemorative Social Security cards to children born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026.
The limited-edition cards will feature the Freedom 250 logo, according to the SSA’s Social Security number and card page.
The cards are tied to the country’s 250th anniversary, which will be marked on July 4, 2026.
The special design is only for newborns during the qualifying period.
SSA says the cards will be issued through the Enumeration at Birth program, which lets parents request a Social Security number during the birth registration process.
Children born before July 2 or after December 31, 2026, will not fall inside the commemorative window.
Parents usually apply for a newborn’s Social Security number when they provide information for the baby’s birth certificate at the hospital.
The SSA explains in its Social Security Numbers for Children publication that this is the easiest way to get a newborn’s number.
The publication also says there is no charge for issuing a Social Security number and card.
The commemorative logo does not change the child’s Social Security number.
A Social Security number remains a key federal record used for taxes, benefits, bank accounts, medical coverage and other official needs.
The special version adds a historic design to one of the first federal documents many children receive.
The White House created a task force in 2025 to help organize events for the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The executive order said the anniversary would honor the 250th year of American independence on July 4, 2026.
The Freedom 250 logo has become part of federal anniversary branding tied to the celebration.
The announcement also gives scammers a new way to target families.
SSA says Social Security cards are free. Its children’s card publication warns that anyone trying to charge for a number or card should be reported.
Parents should not pay anyone who claims they can secure a commemorative card. Families should use the normal hospital birth registration process or official SSA channels.
For families with babies born in the second half of 2026, the card will be both practical and symbolic.
It will serve the same everyday purpose as a standard Social Security card, while also marking the year the United States turned 250.
For those children, one of their first government documents will carry a small reminder of the historic year they were born.
