Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 268 into law this week, making Diwali a recognized state holiday effective January 1, 2026. Public schools and community colleges can now close, giving students an excused absence to celebrate the Hindu Festival of Lights, which also honors Sikhs and Buddhists.
This addition slots Diwali between Labor Day in September and Veterans Day on November 11, benefiting California’s 960,000 Indian-Americans – more than double those in New York or New Jersey.
“I celebrate Diwali together at home with my parents and my children, who will now have the opportunity to share their traditions and customs with friends. It helps build a bond between Californians,” said Gov. Newsom.
Assemblymember Ash Kalra, who introduced the bill, hailed it as a milestone for the Indian diaspora, enabling broader participation in this ancient festival celebrated by over a billion worldwide.
As Diwali 2024 kicks off October 20 with Lakshmi Puja, this law underscores America’s growing embrace of diverse cultures – a reminder that unity shines brightest in shared joy.
