A New York Home’s Halloween Display Looked So Real That Firefighters Answered a Fire Call

Firefighters responding to an apparent house fire in Glens Falls in 2023 discovered a Halloween illusion made with surprisingly ordinary equipment.

Orange light flickered through the windows of a Glens Falls, New York, home. From outside, the Halloween display looked convincing enough to prompt a report of a house fire.

Firefighters responded to the Sanford Street area in late September 2023. What awaited them was a seasonal illusion, rather than a burning building.

The story has continued circulating online, but the incident dates to 2023.

An unexpected discovery on Sanford Street

Contemporary reporting by FOX 5 New York described the response on September 30. Crews discovered that the apparent blaze was part of the homeowner’s Halloween decorations.

The Glens Falls Firefighters IAFF Local 2230 shared footage of the display afterward. In its account, quoted by ITV News, the union called it an “amazing Halloween decoration.”

The union also thanked the homeowner for allowing the footage to be posted. An emergency response had become an opportunity to show people the illusion that had prompted it.

The ordinary equipment behind the effect

The setup relied on two LED lights, a box fan and a silver sheet, according to the firefighters’ explanation reported at the time. A fog machine added another layer to the scene.

Together, the equipment produced the appearance of moving flames and smoke. The striking effect came from combining light, movement and fog, rather than setting anything alight.

That simple list of materials helps explain why the footage drew attention. A familiar house could appear transformed through a few carefully arranged effects.

A Halloween story with a clear date

At the time, the firefighters said the display would run on Friday and Saturday nights through the end of October. That announcement referred to the 2023 season, rather than a current visiting schedule.

The memorable part of the story is the reveal: crews dispatched to investigate a reported fire found a homeowner’s Halloween creation. What looked alarming from the street turned out to be a convincing piece of seasonal stagecraft.
