There may or may not be water on Mars, but there are certainly creatures in our oceans that look like they belong on another planet. A fisherman recently caused a stir after sharing footage of a bizarre, deep-sea creature that many viewers compared to an alien.
The viral clip was uploaded by Roman Fedortsov. Roman is a Russian trawlerman who documents the unusual sea creatures he hauls up from the deep. His Instagram has over 600,000 followers. It has a collection of images of odd marine creatures.
His latest discovery—a bulbous, grayish fish with an almost cartoonish appearance—has left social media users both horrified and fascinated.

The creature in question is identified to be a “smooth lumpsucker.” A marine fish that lives in the northern Pacific Ocean.
Scientifically named Aptocyclus ventricosus, this species grows between 2.4 and 17.3 inches long and can weigh between 0.11 and 9.26 pounds. Unlike typical fish, its body lacks scales and has a soft, fleshy texture.
It has a rounded, almost balloon-like shape, with a modified pelvic fin that acts as a suction disc, allowing it to cling onto surfaces. It is a useful adaptation for surviving in the turbulent deep-sea environment.
Smooth lumpsuckers are found throughout the North Pacific. Especially in the Aleutian Basin, where they live in near-bottom and mid-water layers. They inhabit depths ranging from as shallow as 16 feet to as deep as 5,500 feet.
These depths are home to extreme conditions, including freezing temperatures and immense pressure, making the lumpsucker’s adaptations essential for survival.
These fish are opportunistic feeders, with a diet mainly consisting of medusa (jellyfish) and ctenophores (comb jellies). They also consume small pelagic polychaetes (marine worms) and crustaceans when available.
Their feeding habits suggest they play an important role in controlling jellyfish populations and maintaining balance in their ecosystem.
When it comes to reproduction, smooth lumpsuckers follow a unique breeding process. They are iteroparous gonochoristic fish, meaning they reproduce multiple times throughout their lives and have distinct male and female sexes.
Unlike many deep-sea fish, smooth lumpsuckers migrate from deep waters to coastal zones for spawning. The breeding takes place over rocky bottoms at depths shallower than 33 feet.
During this period, females lay eggs with a thick protective envelope that shields them from mechanical damage in the coastal zone. The eggs take more than 40 days to hatch.
Male smooth lumpsuckers play an essential role in protecting the egg clusters after the females have spawned. They guard them from potential predators and ensure their survival.
This level of parental care is rare among fish species and highlights the unique nature of these deep-sea creatures.
The creature’s sudden appearance on the ship’s deck left many wondering how it ended up there. The bloated, almost swollen look of the fish is not an unusual trait but rather a result of decompression.
When deep-sea fish rapidly come to the surface, the drastic pressure change can cause their bodies to expand unnaturally. It leads to their eerie, alien-like appearances.
Fedortsov’s latest catch quickly became a talking point on social media. Comments flooded in, with many claiming the fish looked otherworldly. “That is 100% an alien,” wrote one Instagram user.
Another joked, “That’s the pet of aliens living underwater.” Others compared it to popular fictional characters, such as Megamind, the aliens from Mars Attacks!, and Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
While the creature’s bizarre features sparked laughter and curiosity, the discovery also raises questions about the deep sea’s role as Earth’s final frontier.
Scientists estimate that more than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. Each year new species are coming to the surface defying our expectations. Deep-sea trawling and increasing human activity in the oceans continue to bring unknown marine life to the surface.
It reveals just how little we truly understand about the creatures lurking in the abyss.
This isn’t the first time deep-sea life has gone viral on social media. Just weeks ago, TikTok users were captivated by the fate of a small anglerfish that surfaced and died shortly after.
