A Lincoln County family is grappling with a heartbreaking tragedy after their 3-year-old son, Parker Vasquez, died days following a devastating crash on Highway 274, just north of Cherryville.
Parker was critically injured when a car T-boned the family’s van during a trip to get ice cream. While his mother and siblings survived, Parker suffered severe head trauma and never regained consciousness.
After several days on life support at Levine Children’s Hospital, Parker was pronounced brain-dead. His family made the courageous decision to donate his organs — a gift that could save or improve the lives of up to 80 people, including children in critical need.
“He loved to share, and he would love to share this,” said his mother, Angie Vasquez, who now carries a special device with a recording of Parker’s heartbeat. She hopes one day to hear it again in another child.
Doctors say Parker’s heart, lungs, kidneys, and even his skin will be donated. The honor walk, where medical staff line hospital halls to pay tribute, is scheduled before the donation surgery. Parker will wear a Spider-Man mask during the procession — his favorite superhero.
“He’s our guardian angel now,” said Angie. “This is his last little gift.”
As the Vasquez family faces unimaginable grief, they cling to the hope that Parker’s legacy lives on — beating in the chest of another child.
