A fast-moving fire tore through a large residential apartment complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district on Wednesday, leaving at least 40 people dead and hundreds more missing, according to local officials. The fire began shortly before 3 p.m. at Wang Fuk Court and rapidly spread across multiple high-rise buildings.
Authorities upgraded the incident to a No. 5 alarm, Hong Kong’s highest emergency fire rating. Videos shared online show flames shooting up building exteriors and thick smoke pouring from hundreds of windows as nightfall made rescue conditions even more difficult.
Hundreds Missing as Search Efforts Continue
Hong Kong leader John Lee confirmed during a Thursday press briefing that 279 people have been reported missing. More than two dozen individuals were hospitalized for injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to severe burns.
The fire also claimed the life of a responding firefighter. The Fire Services Department identified him as 37 year old Ho Wai-ho, who was found collapsed inside the building and later died at the hospital. “The fire has resulted in many casualties, including a fireman who died in the line of duty,” Lee said in a statement expressing condolences.
Construction Safety Under Investigation
Police arrested three men connected to the construction firm responsible for renovation work at the complex. Officials say early evidence suggests unsafe building materials may have accelerated the spread of the flames.
Investigators reported that Styrofoam panels and nonstandard safety mesh were installed along the outer walls and windows of the building. Police say the same materials were also found in one unaffected building, suggesting widespread use during renovations.
Fire experts noted that the materials could burn rapidly and release heavy smoke, contributing to the speed and intensity of the blaze. More technical investigations are expected as officials examine compliance records and building permits.
Large-Scale Emergency Response
More than 800 firefighters, police, and paramedics were deployed, along with at least 140 fire engines and drones to locate trapped residents. Emergency shelters were opened for displaced families, and search teams continued working through the night.
Rescue crews say they have gained control in four buildings, but active fires remain in three others. Officials estimate seven of the complex’s eight towers sustained fire damage.
