BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu said the company employed more than 1.02 million people in October 2026, including about 120,000 research and development engineers. The figure covers a group whose operations reach beyond vehicle assembly into batteries, electronics and other technologies.

Reports put roughly 960,000 employees in China and 60,000 overseas. The scale reflects BYD’s approach of making many components internally. Comparisons with rival automakers require care because different companies outsource different amounts of work and report their headcounts at different dates.
