A routine drive to school turned into a tragedy on a Nevada highway. Police bodycam footage now shows the moment an 11 year old boy was shot and killed during an intense road rage encounter on Interstate 215 in Henderson, Nevada.
According to police statements and arrest records, the shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. when two drivers, 33 year old stepfather Ayala and 22 year old Tyler Matthew Johns, began cutting each other off in traffic. Henderson Police reported that both drivers rolled down their windows and yelled at each other before shots were fired.
A Heartbreaking Moment Captured on Camera
In the released bodycam footage, the officer approaches the scene after the crash. Ayala can be seen collapsing to the ground, screaming “My kid is dead.” The officer quickly looks inside the vehicle and finds the 11 year old boy shot in the back seat. The boy was later pronounced dead at the scene.
As the stepfather screams in panic and grief, the suspected gunman calmly walks toward the responding officer. Footage shows Johns placing his hands behind his back and stating, “Take me to jail.” He also says, “I shot at him, bro,” and admits he fired out of anger during the argument. Johns later added, “I didn’t know there was a kid in the back and I killed him.”
Police confirmed that after the shooting, Ayala rammed Johns’ vehicle, forcing both cars to stop in the middle of the highway. A passing Las Vegas Metro Police officer witnessed the fight and stepped in to detain Johns before backup arrived.
Charges and Investigation
Henderson Police charged Johns with murder and discharging a firearm into a vehicle. Records from the Henderson Police Department show Johns remains in custody while investigators collect evidence and witness statements. Officials have not announced whether additional charges will be filed.
The tragic shooting takes place during a time when road rage violence has increased nationally. A report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows firearm-related road rage incidents have risen in recent years.
Family Grieves the Loss
The victim has been identified as 11 year old Brandon Dominguez. His family shared a heartbreaking tribute on a GoFundMe page, writing, “Brandon was the light of our family.” The family described him as a joyful child with a silly personality and a kind heart. The fundraiser has raised over 38,000 dollars as of this week.
“There are no words big enough to describe the pain we are feeling,” the family wrote.
Community Response and Next Steps
Henderson Police say the investigation is ongoing and encourage witnesses to contact detectives with additional information. Road closures following the shooting created long delays on the busy interstate, and city officials say counseling resources will be made available for those affected.
The footage and confession sparked national attention as many questioned how a school commute could escalate into a deadly shooting. Community leaders have called for stronger accountability and more education on conflict management behind the wheel.
For now, one family is left grieving a devastating and unexpected loss that unfolded in seconds.
