Beloved North Carolina Teacher Killed by Intruder While on Phone With 911, Police Say

A North Carolina teacher killed during a home break-in was still on the phone with 911 when the attack turned fatal.

A quiet North Carolina neighborhood was shaken Saturday morning after a home break-in turned deadly, claiming the life of a well-known schoolteacher.

Police say the victim, was attacked inside her home while she was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher.

She later died from her injuries, leaving her school community and neighbors in shock.

Attack Happened During 911 Call

Raleigh police responded just after 6:30 a.m. to the 800 block of Clay Street.

Officers arrived to find Welsh critically injured inside her home.

Investigators said Welsh had called 911 to report a man inside her house.

While she was still speaking with dispatchers, the intruder attacked and beat her, police said.

Welsh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

Welsh was a teacher in Raleigh.

The school described her as a cornerstone of its Upper School Science Department.

“The Ravenscroft community is devastated by the loss of our beloved colleague and friend,” a school spokesperson told ABC11.

“Her loss is deeply felt by all of us who had the privilege of working with her and learning in her classroom.”

Police said additional officers canvassing the area located a suspect nearby.

The suspect, 36-year-old Ryan Camacho, was taken into custody and questioned.

Authorities later charged Camacho with murder and felony burglary.

Police said neighbors did not recognize the suspect and were stunned by the violence.

Residents in the area said the crime felt unimaginable.

“It’s devastating,” neighbor Joshua Carpenter said. “It’s shocking to hear about this happening so close to home.”

Police have not said whether Welsh and the suspect knew each other.

“I am deeply heartbroken for this mother, friend, and mentor to many in our community,” Boyce said.

He praised responding officers for quickly apprehending the suspect.

Boyce said the arrest sends a clear message that violent crime will not be tolerated in Raleigh.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

Ravenscroft School announced it will provide grief counseling and support resources for students, faculty, and staff.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends,” the school said.

For many in the community, the loss of Zoe Welsh is both personal and deeply unsettling.

A teacher described as compassionate and dedicated is now being remembered, even as questions remain about how such a tragedy unfolded.
