A 19-year-old pilot safely landed a small aircraft on a busy road in Florida after the plane suddenly lost engine power mid flight.
The dramatic emergency landing happened on March 6 on Indiantown Road in Jupiter, Florida. Despite the risky maneuver, no one on the plane or on the ground was injured.
The pilot, Niko Bray, was flying a Cessna 150G while giving a friend an aerial tour of north Palm Beach County when the engine began to fail.
The incident is being reviewed by aviation authorities, according to information from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Engine Trouble Mid Flight
Bray said the flight initially appeared normal until the aircraft began climbing.
He noticed the engine’s revolutions per minute suddenly dropping even though the power setting remained at full.
“Everything was normal,” Bray told reporters. “I started climbing and the engine rpm started to drop.”
Realizing the aircraft was losing altitude, Bray began searching for a safe place to land.
Quick Decision Prevented Disaster
With the plane continuing to descend, Bray aligned the aircraft with Indiantown Road and prepared for an emergency landing.
He had originally considered landing on nearby U.S. Highway 1 but quickly decided it was too narrow for the small plane.
“I just lined up with Indiantown Road and flew the plane for as long as I could,” Bray said.
He added that the entire emergency unfolded in less than two minutes.
“It was less than two minutes from the time I realized there was a problem to landing on the ground,” he explained.
New Pilot Shows Calm Under Pressure
Bray received his pilot’s license in January 2025 and currently works as a flight instructor.
Officials say his calm response likely prevented serious injuries or damage.
Emergency landings are rare but pilots are trained to quickly identify safe landing areas if engine failure occurs.
Safety guidelines for aircraft emergencies are outlined by the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates aviation incidents.
