A Yunnan Groom Invited Strangers to His Wedding, and Thousands Came to Celebrate

Xu Chenghong’s online wedding invitation brought crowds to Yunnan. Here is what reporting supports, and what remains under scrutiny.

Xu Chenghong feared there would be too few people at his wedding. His invitation to strangers instead drew crowds to Yunnan, China, ahead of the October 31, 2026 celebration.

Reports describe visitors bringing food, household appliances and practical help. The response became large enough for organizers to relocate the festivities.

There is also a significant follow-up: on November 3, local tourism officials said they were checking online questions about whether the event had been staged. That review had no reported conclusion in the coverage cited here.

Why Xu invited people he had never met

Known online as Xiao Xiao Xu, the 24-year-old posted his invitation on October 25.

In an account carried by Chinese reporting on October 29, Xu said his father died when he was three, his mother remarried when he was five, and his grandmother later died. He and his older brother then relied on each other.

Those details describe his account of childhood. The shorthand “orphan,” used widely in reposts, should not be read as confirmation that both parents had died.

Xu said he had few relatives and friends to invite and wanted people to fill the banquet tables. He subsequently told reporters that he had expected only a small response.

Guests brought more than their good wishes

AsiaOne’s November 1 account described visitors offering ingredients, appliances, cooking and decorating help. Supporters also arranged wedding vehicles.

The growing gathering required a larger public space and assistance with logistics.

Shanghai Daily’s November 1 report added an instructive detail: a person handling the gift register said cash gifts were accepted from relatives and family friends, but not online well-wishers.

The same report cautioned that attendance estimates varied. People arrived over several days, while spectators came and went. A single precise total would give readers more certainty than the available reporting supports.

What the later reporting changes

A November 3 report by Yangtse Evening Post/Ziniu News, carried on The Paper, said Zhaotong tourism staff were checking public questions about whether the wedding story was scripted. The outlet had not received a response to its interview request to Xu by publication.

Earlier, Xu had told Red Star News that his purpose was to fill the tables, responding to suggestions that the invitation was publicity.

Questions are not proof of deception. They do, however, mean the story deserves an update alongside the images of generosity.

The gathering and the help described by reporters remain the heart of the account. Its precise scale and the unresolved questions should travel with it whenever the story is shared.
