A woman died after becoming unwell in the sea near Southbourne promenade in Bournemouth on Monday, June 22, 2026.
Members of the public reportedly brought the woman to shore before emergency crews arrived. Paramedics attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Services Rushed to the Beach
South Western Ambulance Service received a call at 2:17 p.m. about an incident near Boscombe.
The service sent two double-crewed ambulances, an air ambulance, a rapid-response vehicle and an operations officer. Witnesses reported seeing paramedics perform CPR on the promenade.
Dorset Police received a request for assistance at 2:21 p.m. Officers cleared an area so medical crews could work safely.
“Sadly, a short time later a woman was pronounced dead at the scene,” Dorset Police said.
Witnesses Describe Rescue Attempt
A beach hut owner told local media that the woman appeared to suffer a medical emergency while she was in the water with a boy believed to be her son.
The witness said people nearby quickly entered the water and helped bring her back to shore. Emergency services have not publicly confirmed the relationship between the woman and the boy.
Official statements have also not confirmed whether the woman drowned or experienced another medical condition before entering difficulty.
Death Is Not Being Treated as Suspicious
Dorset Police said the woman’s next of kin had been informed. The coroner was also notified.

Incident Happened During Intense Heatwave
The emergency occurred as unusually high temperatures attracted thousands of people to beaches across southern England.
A rare red extreme-heat warning was issued for parts of England and Wales for June 24 and 25. Temperatures were forecast to approach 38 to 40 degrees Celsius in some locations.
The warning means extreme heat could affect healthy people as well as vulnerable groups. It could also disrupt transportation, health services, power supplies and other infrastructure.
However, authorities have not linked the woman’s death to the heatwave. A coroner will determine the medical cause.
Open Water Can Carry Hidden Risks
The Royal Life Saving Society UK reports that 90 percent of accidental drownings recorded during the past five years occurred at open-water locations, including inland waterways and coastal areas.
Cold water, changing tides, waves and strong currents can create difficulties for experienced swimmers. The risk can increase during hot weather because people may enter cold water suddenly while trying to cool down.
Cold water shock can cause involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, panic and difficulty moving. It can occur even when the air temperature is extremely warm.
How to Stay Safer at the Coast
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution advises people to choose lifeguarded beaches and swim between red and yellow flags.
Swimmers should check weather and tide conditions, enter the water slowly and remain within their abilities. Anyone who unexpectedly enters cold water should try to relax and float until their breathing comes under control.
If someone is in trouble at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. People should avoid entering the water for a rescue unless trained because doing so may place another life at risk.
The woman’s death remains with the coroner as her family awaits further information about what happened.
