A 15 year old girl in Oneida, Wisconsin, has been rescued after authorities say she suffered long term neglect inside her family home. According to police, the teen weighed just 35 pounds when she was removed from the residence in August.
Officials say the teen lived with her biological father, Walter Goodman, 47, his wife Melissa Goodman, 51, and two other adults. Police became involved after Goodman called 911 on August 21 when the teen became unresponsive. Court documents say responders believed the girl appeared significantly younger than her age when they arrived.
Hospital doctors later documented severe malnutrition and multiple medical complications, according to reports obtained by Fox News. Prosecutors say medical staff noted the teen began eating normally once placed in care, which raised concerns about the household environment.
Investigation Leads to Neglect Charges
After reviewing statements, medical findings, and text messages shared among the adults in the home, prosecutors charged the four individuals with chronic child neglect. County officials say the teen moved into the home in 2020 after her biological mother entered the prison system.
Assistant District Attorney Julie DuQuaine called the case one of the most serious neglect situations she has seen in her career. All four defendants are currently being held on $100,000 cash bail, according to county jail records and reporting from USA Today Network Wisconsin.
Teen Now Recovering
Officials say the girl has since been released from the hospital and is recovering in the care of other family members. Medical teams report she has gained weight and responded positively to consistent care, food, and emotional support.
