Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers made saving the world look exhausting, frightening and occasionally very funny.

Gellar later reduced her acting workload to spend more time with her family, then returned through projects including Do Revenge, Wolf Pack and Dexter: Original Sin. Her recent film work includes the 2026 horror-comedy Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

There is also an important update for fans waiting for more Buffy: in March 2026, Gellar confirmed that Hulu would not move forward with the planned revival, Buffy: New Sunnydale. That project’s cancellation is separate from her continuing acting career.

Buffy created an enduring connection with viewers

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003. Gellar’s central performance combined physical action with the emotional burdens of a young woman expected to keep everyone else safe.

The friendships mattered as much as the monsters. Buffy’s world included Willow, played by Alyson Hannigan, whose later career also moved across comedy and family entertainment.

For Gellar, that long association has continued to shape the questions audiences ask about her. A new project can quickly become an occasion to discuss whether she will return to the role that made her a defining television figure.

Her screen identity also extends to Cruel Intentions and other films. The contrast between Buffy and the calculating Kathryn in Cruel Intentions helps explain why filmmakers still draw on audiences’ memories of her earlier work.

She chose to make more room for family

In a March 2026 People interview, Gellar explained that she stepped back in 2014 to focus on her young children. She also recalled the death of Robin Williams, her co-star on The Crazy Ones, during that period.

“For the first time I wanted a break,” she said.

That explanation comes from Gellar herself. It gives a concrete reason for a quieter stretch without requiring speculation about her ambitions or whether Hollywood had stopped offering work.

Her interests outside acting also produced a book. In 2017, she and Gia Russo published Stirring Up Fun with Food, a collection of creative kitchen projects for families.

Publisher Hachette describes activities designed to involve children in preparing food. The book is a tangible part of the years between her regular television commitments, reflecting work that was connected to family life in a different way.

Do Revenge played with her screen history

Gellar appeared as a school headmaster in the 2022 Netflix film Do Revenge. The role placed her in a position of authority over a new generation of teenage characters.

Netflix’s interview with Gellar and writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson explicitly connects the casting to Cruel Intentions. Robinson described Gellar as her ideal choice.

The appearance works partly because viewers recognize her. An actor once associated with a ruthless teenage character now occupies the adult office where students face consequences.

It was a smaller role than Buffy, but a deliberate use of her presence and history. Screen time alone does not explain why a particular performance stands out or why a filmmaker seeks a familiar actor.

Wolf Pack and Dexter returned her to darker television

Gellar starred in and executive produced Wolf Pack, playing investigator Kristin Ramsey. The supernatural series followed the aftermath of a California wildfire and the emergence of a dangerous creature.

The show lasted one season. TVLine reported its cancellation in January 2024, closing that chapter rather than leaving a second season pending.

She subsequently played Tanya Martin in Dexter: Original Sin. Paramount’s cast listing places her alongside Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater and the actors portraying younger versions of familiar Dexter characters.

The prequel also ended after one season. Its earlier renewal was reversed in August 2025, according to TheWrap.

These are two distinct productions and two completed roles. Neither cancellation amounts to Gellar announcing a retirement, and her later film release makes that distinction clear.

Ready or Not 2 brought another horror-comedy role

Gellar joined Samara Weaving, Kathryn Newton, Shawn Hatosy and Elijah Wood in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The 2026 sequel was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Searchlight’s official synopsis follows Grace after the original film’s deadly game. This time, her estranged sister is drawn into a larger struggle involving rival families.

The studio now lists the film as streaming. It is therefore a released credit audiences can seek out, rather than a future project mentioned only in casting announcements.

Gellar’s continuing connection to horror fits alongside the genre careers of performers such as Jamie Lee Curtis. Both have remained recognizable to horror audiences while taking work beyond the roles that first established that association.

For Gellar, the sequel supplies a current example of choosing another ensemble within a genre she knows well.

The planned Buffy revival will not proceed at Hulu

The biggest disappointment for some longtime fans came in March 2026. Gellar announced that Hulu had decided not to proceed with Buffy: New Sunnydale, a planned continuation involving director Chloé Zhao.

Variety’s report documented the announcement and the end of that particular project. Ryan Kiera Armstrong had been set to play a new slayer, with Gellar returning as Buffy.

A proposed series and a commissioned, released series are different things. As of November 2026, that canceled production should not appear on a list of upcoming Gellar performances.

Her career can be followed without treating every development as a route back to Sunnydale. She has publicly explained her family-focused pause, returned through several different roles, and released another film in 2026. Buffy remains a major part of her history, while the work after Buffy has continued on its own terms.
