Khandi Alexander gave CSI: Miami its gentlest voice, even when Dr. Alexx Woods was speaking to the dead.
What happened to Khandi Alexander after she left that familiar role? She moved into demanding dramas, became Scandal’s unforgettable Mama Pope, and eventually returned to television comedy.
As of November 2026, her recent work includes Miss Carroll in Abbott Elementary. Her career has taken her far beyond the medical examiner’s room, without following a simple retirement-and-comeback story.
Why Alexx Woods Was Only One Part of Her Career
For many viewers, Alexander will always be Alexx, the medical examiner who treated victims as people rather than evidence. Her warmth made the character stand out within a fast-moving crime series.
But she already had a varied television career. She played Catherine Duke in NewsRadio and Jackie Robbins, Dr. Peter Benton’s sister, in ER.
The Television Academy’s profile also recognizes her performance in HBO’s 2000 miniseries The Corner. Those credits span workplace comedy, medical drama, and an unflinching story about addiction.
That range helps explain what came next. Alexander had more interests than one long-running character could contain.

Why She Left CSI: Miami
Alexander’s regular run on CSI: Miami lasted from 2002 to 2008. Her explanation for leaving centered on wanting to stretch herself as a performer.
In a 2015 Chicago Defender interview, she spoke warmly about the show and described the risk of becoming typecast.
“When I left CSI: Miami, I didn’t leave to go anywhere,” she said.
She explained that she wanted to explore other work before she knew what would follow. David Simon’s invitation to join Treme came afterward.
That sequence matters. She did not describe walking away because she already had another series secured. She described making room for something different.
Nor does her account support turning the departure into a feud or a downfall. She expressed gratitude to the producers and said they allowed her to move forward.

How Treme Changed the Kind of Work She Was Doing
Treme offered Alexander a character far removed from a television crime laboratory. She played LaDonna Batiste-Williams, a New Orleans bar owner living through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Her preparation was unusually hands-on. In a 2014 Studio 360 interview carried by WNYC, she described exploring New Orleans neighborhoods to find a real-life model for LaDonna.
She studied a woman she encountered, even offering to buy her clothes and earrings. The goal was a person with recognizable habits, rather than a general idea of a tough bar owner.
The interview also traced Alexander’s beginnings as a dancer. Before committing to acting, she had worried about whether Black actresses could find steady employment.
She looked toward theater and performers who sustained careers across different kinds of work. Seen that way, the move from a hit procedural to Treme fits a much longer pattern.
She was building a career around characters, rather than waiting for another version of Alexx Woods.
Why Scandal Made Her Familiar to a New Audience
Alexander then entered a very different television world as Maya Pope, Olivia Pope’s mother in Scandal. The character brought danger and unpredictability to a series already full of secrets.
For viewers who knew the compassion of Alexx Woods, Mama Pope was a sharp change.
Her performance earned a 2015 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. The Television Academy lists the nomination specifically for her work as Maya Pope.

She also played Viola, Bessie Smith’s older sister, opposite Queen Latifah in HBO’s Bessie. The Academy’s feature on the 2015 film identifies her among its principal supporting performers.
Those roles show why leaving one successful series did not mark the end of her most substantial work.
What Happened Between Scandal and Abbott Elementary
Alexander’s later credits continued across genres. Her Metacritic filmography records work in SEAL Team, A Black Lady Sketch Show, and What We Do in the Shadows.
These appearances can be easier to overlook than a weekly starring role. A familiar actor may remain busy while appearing less often in the particular shows a viewer follows.
Then, in January 2026, news arrived that Alexander had joined Abbott Elementary in a recurring role. Laughing Place’s casting report identified her debut episode as “Mall Part 3: Heroes.”
The move also brought her back to comedy, a form she had worked in long before CSI: Miami.
Where Khandi Alexander Is Now
Alexander’s recent television work includes playing Miss Carroll in Abbott Elementary’s fifth season. TVmaze’s episode record credits her in “Campaign,” which aired on March 18, 2026.
That is a concrete recent performance, rather than a proposed comeback or an unconfirmed casting rumor.
Her public career now makes more sense as a series of changes in tone and scale: comedy, crime television, intimate drama, and comedy again.
The actress who once made a medical examiner feel like the emotional center of a crime show has continued finding different ways into a scene. Alexx Woods remains memorable, but Alexander’s work never ended at that autopsy table.
