What Happened to Jessica Chastain? Her Career Now

Jessica Chastain’s career spans an Oscar, Broadway, producing and new films. Here’s what she is doing now.

Jessica Chastain’s determined CIA analyst in Zero Dark Thirty made her impossible to overlook.

She has continued acting while building a production company and returning to Broadway. By November 2026, her recent work included Dreams and the horror film Other Mommy, while her Apple TV series The Savant had moved to a reported spring 2027 release.

Her career now stretches well beyond the intense dramatic roles that first brought her awards attention. It includes choosing which stories get made, playing unsettling characters and taking the risks that come with live theater.

Her breakthrough arrived across several very different films

Chastain’s rise is often attached to The Help, but 2011 gave audiences several introductions to her at once. She appeared in Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, Jeff Nichols’s Take Shelter and the espionage drama The Debt, alongside her role as Celia Foote in The Help.

Those performances offered unusually different versions of a new star: a mother in a dreamlike family story, a wife facing uncertainty and a socially isolated woman searching for friendship. Her Golden Globes career profile traces that concentrated run of films.

The Help also connected her career with Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis, whose work helped make the ensemble memorable.

Then Zero Dark Thirty gave Chastain a very different center of gravity. Her performance as Maya earned a leading-actress nomination at the 2013 Academy Awards. Within a short period, she had become an actor capable of carrying an ambitious film herself.

Playing Tammy Faye brought her an Oscar

Chastain’s eventual Oscar win came through a character whose outward appearance could easily have overwhelmed the person underneath it.

In The Eyes of Tammy Faye, she played television evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker opposite Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker. The film followed their expanding religious broadcasting empire and its collapse, with Chastain placing Tammy Faye at the center of the story. Searchlight’s film synopsis describes that rise and fall.

The role asked audiences to look beyond a familiar public image. Tammy Faye’s makeup and television persona were instantly recognizable, but a feature-length performance required emotional life behind that recognition.

Chastain won best actress at the 2022 Academy Awards. The result marked a major milestone more than a decade after the films that first established her.

It also made clear how much range existed between her best-known performances. Maya’s tightly contained determination and Tammy Faye’s expressive public warmth demanded very different approaches.

Freckle Films gave her a role behind the camera

Alongside acting, Chastain developed a more direct role in bringing projects into existence.

She founded Freckle Films in 2016. The company describes its mission as creating opportunities for women and people whose perspectives have been underrepresented in entertainment. Its leadership includes Kelly Carmichael, who joined in 2017 as president of production and development, according to Freckle Films’ company profile.

That work changes what an acting career can involve. Choosing a performance is one decision; helping develop material and assemble a production involves decisions long before filming begins.

For Chastain, the production company adds another explanation for the shape of her later career. Audiences see the finished performances, while development work happens on a much less visible timetable.

A Doll’s House took her back to live performance

In 2023, Chastain played Nora in a Broadway revival of A Doll’s House, directed by Jamie Lloyd and adapted by Amy Herzog.

The production opened at the Hudson Theatre that March. Chastain received a Tony nomination for leading actress in a play, one of the revival’s six nominations, according to the Tony Awards’ production record.

Nora’s struggle over marriage, responsibility and independence put Chastain inside a story built around a woman reconsidering the life arranged around her. Onstage, that transformation had to unfold in front of an audience each night.

The production belongs beside her film work when considering where her career went after the Oscar. A substantial Broadway engagement can make an actor less visible in new releases while demanding an enormous amount of performance work.

Dreams and Other Mommy brought difficult new characters

In Michel Franco’s Dreams, Chastain played Jennifer, a wealthy American woman involved with a Mexican ballet dancer named Fernando, played by Isaac Hernández. The relationship places affection alongside sharply unequal access to money, movement and security. The film’s distributor outlines that central conflict.

Her 2026 horror release Other Mommy offered a different challenge. Directed by Rob Savage, it centers on a child confronted by a frightening presence connected to the image of her mother. Chastain played both the mother and the threatening figure.

Speaking to PORTER in October 2026, she explained her longstanding attraction to the genre: “I fell in love with horror because usually the girl is the hero and she defeats the monster.”

The film opened theatrically on October 9. Universal subsequently announced a November 10 digital release, putting another major Chastain performance in front of home audiences soon afterward.

The Savant is still part of her next chapter

One anticipated Chastain project has taken longer to reach viewers.

The Savant, in which she stars and serves as an executive producer, follows an investigator working inside online hate networks to prevent violence. Apple postponed its planned September 2025 premiere.

By September 2026, TheWrap reported a spring 2027 release plan. That makes it an upcoming project as of November 4, 2026, rather than an already released series.

Chastain’s recent career is therefore visible across several places at once: cinema screens, a Broadway stage, a production company and a television project still awaiting its audience. The roles have changed, but her willingness to take on demanding central characters remains easy to recognize.
