A terrifying moment unfolded in the skies as a United Airlines Boeing 787 declared a ‘MAYDAY’ due to critical engine failure right after takeoff. The Munich-bound Flight UA108 had just climbed out of Washington Dulles Airport when its left engine malfunctioned, prompting the crew to make an urgent radio call.
On July 25, shortly after leaving Dulles, the aircraft experienced trouble at an altitude of 5,000 feet. With an engine failure, the pilots immediately worked with air traffic controllers to navigate a safe return. According to reports, they circled in a holding pattern for 2 hours and 38 minutes to dump fuel, maintaining an altitude of 6,000 feet to manage the aircraft’s weight.
“We declared a MAYDAY and were guided by ATC to ensure safe separation from other air traffic,” said one of the pilots.
