A quiet afternoon on Lake Dias turned into a dramatic rescue mission when a speedboat started spinning wildly with its driver unresponsive. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday in Volusia County, Florida, could have ended in disaster. However, thanks to the swift action of local authorities, the situation came under control.
The individual’s name on the boat is still not released. He was piloting his boat when he suddenly lost consciousness due to a medical emergency. With no one controlling it, the boat continued at full speed in erratic circles.
Volusia County’s citizens on patrol member Charlie McCrary was conducting a routine check of the lake. Then he randomly noticed the boat’s chaotic movements.
“I got out of my unit, walked up to the dock, and I couldn’t see anybody in the boat whatsoever,” McCrary recalled in a statement released by the sheriff’s office.
Realizing something was wrong, he immediately radioed for help.
Within minutes, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Marine Unit and Volusia County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene. Initial attempts to stop the boat proved difficult. Deputies first tried using their larger vessel to push the runaway boat toward shore, but it was too risky. They then attempted to create a wake to steer it closer, but the effort failed.
With time running out and the boat still out of control, authorities decided on a more daring approach. Volusia County Fire Rescue Acting Division Chief and Technical Rescue Deputy Team Leader John Kyp positioned himself on the sheriff’s boat, waiting for the right moment.
As they moved in close, Kyp leaped onto the spinning speedboat, narrowly avoiding low-hanging branches.
Body camera footage captured the tense moment as Kyp quickly steadied himself and shut off the engine. He then checked the unconscious man, ensuring he was still breathing before signaling for an immediate medical evacuation. The man was transferred to the Marine Unit’s boat and rushed to shore. Emergency medical teams quickly attended to treat the man.
Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital, where he received medical attention. Officials later confirmed that he is expected to make a full recovery.
The rescue serves as a reminder of the dangers of operating watercraft alone, especially when health conditions are unknown. Authorities praised the quick thinking and teamwork that prevented a potentially deadly accident.
